The day of the hike had arrived, and the Buttercup troop was at the castle. Ruby's mother, Helen, was helping the Buttercups make sure they have what they needed.
"Flashlights?" Helen asked.
"Check," the Buttercups answered.
"Sleeping bags," Helen continued.
"Check," the Buttercups answered.
"Trouble-whistles," Helen went on.
The Buttercups took out their trouble-whistles and blew on them to show they had them.
"Perfect—now all we need is our visitor," Helen said.
Hugo came along, dressed in a green hiking outfit. "I'm here," he called.
Seeing Hugo's green clothes, Sofia remarked, "Talk about going green."
"Ah, it looks like you picked a good outfit to wear in the woods, Prince Hugo," Helen smiled. "The creatures in the forest won't be able to see you while you're hiding in the bushes."
"You sure have a lot of stuff there," Sofia remarked.
"I know—Dad told me I'd need this stuff for the hike, but I don't know what for," Hugo said.
"Well, you'll never know," Sofia said. "Maybe I can help you with this here bag."
"Thanks, princess," Hugo smiled, handing Sofia his bag.
"Alright, Buttercups let's move out," Helen announced.
As Hugo and the Buttercups started heading to the forest, Sofia, Meg, and Peg cheered, "Buttercups! Buttercups! Don't be slow! Buttercups! Buttercups! Time to go!"
But Ruby and Jade were a little jealous of Hugo to focus on what they were doing.
After some time, Hugo and the Buttercups were in the woods.
"No swamps so far," Hugo commented.
"Oh, we won't be at the swamp until tomorrow, Hugo," Sofia told him.
"Oh, good," Hugo sighed in relief. "It would be horrible to sleep if I fell in the swamp and got dirty before going to bed and without having to take a bath."
"There's no need to worry, Prince Hugo," Helen told him. "We'll all help you stay out of trouble."
"But what if I find myself in trouble?" Hugo inquired.
Sofia took out a trouble-whistle and handed it to Hugo. "Here you go—take a trouble-whistle," she said.
Sofia blew on hers and instructed, "If you find yourself in any trouble, just blow on it and the Buttercups will come to your rescue."
"Thanks, Sofia," Hugo sighed.
"Be careful, Buttercups—and Hugo," Helen warned. "There's poison ivy around here. We need to stay on the path, so we don't get a rash."
Ruby and Jade turned to each other and smirked. Jade carefully picked off a poison ivy leaf and stuck it into Hugo's left boot.
