It's 7 o'clock and I'm waiting with my phone in my lap on my bed. Suddenly, my phone rings and I pick it up. "Hello?"
"Hey," I hear a voice, but it's not his.
"Hey, Regina." I say, trying not to sound disappointed.
"I just wanted to check up on you. I should have called sooner, but life got in the way."
"Oh, I'm fine." I say. "Thanks."
"Don't pretend I don't know you. Are you really okay, Emma? Do you need anything? I can come over if you want. Maybe this weekend?"
I know she's only trying to look out for me, so I say, "Sure. Thanks."
"Okay, I'll text you. Bye."
"Bye."
I hang up and see a missed call from Killian. I instantly call him back and he answers.
"Hey, sorry about that. Regina called to check up on me."
"Don't worry about it. Listen, I've got some good news...and some bad news."
"Okay. Good news first." I decide.
"I did some research and there's a group of wizards and Squibs in New York City."
"That's great!"
"Yeah, and it looks like they don't really send squibs off on missions like my current group does. They just let us do the boring 'headquarter' stuff.
"So you wouldn't be gone every couple months."
"...Right."
"That's amazing news!" I say, before remembering the bad news. "So, what's the bad news?"
"Well, my boss is reluctant to let me go. Our group is really small compared to other ones around the world and he needs me to stay. That's what he actually said. He needs me."
"Wow," I say.
"And there's more," he says slowly. "He's...sending me to California for a case."
"What?!? But you just got back!" I say, beyond shocked. And everything was going so well.
"I know. I know. I'm so sorry, Emma." He says, his voice trembling.
"For how long?" I ask.
"I don't know. He just told me."
I take a deep breath. Then something explodes inside me. I can't do this. I can't do this anymore. "Killian, I really want this to work. I really really do. More than anything. But if you're going to be gone all the time, what am I supposed to do? Just sit here wondering when you're going to come back? I don't think so."
"Emma..." He says, then pauses. "You're right." He says quietly. "I don't know what I'm doing, expecting you to wait for me. I'm holding you back from living your life. I'm sorry."
"Killian, what's happening to us?" I say, immediately regretting what I said before.
"I'm letting you go. It's the right thing to do."
"No, don't. I'm sorry for what I said. I want us to be together." I say.
"No, Emma. I think this is best for us."
"No it's not! Killian, I will sit here and wait for you because I love you. I don't care how long you're gone. As long as you come back to me."
"Emma, it's a choice between you and my work. And I can't choose you."
All of the air has left my lungs and I can't breathe. How did his happen? One second we're discussing our future and the next that future is gone.
