The Truth

It's a Saturday afternoon and I'm reading The Selection on the couch. I only had a three day work week because of the storm, but I dread the amount of work I will have to come back to on Monday. I'm so captivated by my book that I don't notice Henry's question.

"Mom?" Henry asks.

I look up from my book. "Oh, sorry Henry. What did you ask?"

"I asked if it was okay if I could go out with my friends."

"Yeah, of course. Where are you going?"

"The mall. Claire's mom is driving us."

"That's very kind of her. Next time I'll drive, okay?"

"Alright. Thanks, Mom." He sends a text and returns to his bedroom.

When the doorbell rings, I get up and answer the door. Claire's mom, Beatrice, is standing there with Claire and a few other kids. "Hi, Beatrice." I greet her.

"Hi, Emma." She says, smiling. "Nice to see you."

"You too." I say. Suddenly, I remember something. "Thank you for driving Henry home a few weeks ago. If you ever want any help with driving the kids anywhere, I would be happy to help."

"It was no problem at all. I wouldn't want him walking home in the rain. And thank you for your offer." She says.

Henry comes to the door and turns to me. "Bye, Mom. I'll be back in a few hours."

"Bye, Henry." I say. He walks out and I close the door. I make a quick hot chocolate and return to my book. Around 3 o'clock, I hear the doorbell. I check the kitchen clock. That was quick. He's only been out for about an hour, I think. I open the door and see Killian instead. "Hey." I say.

"Emma," he says, giving me a small smile. "Want to go for a walk?"

"Sure." I say. I get my purse and lock the door behind me. We walk out of the apartment and down a few blocks to a park. Killian grabs my hand without looking sideways and takes a deep breath. "Emma, I have to tell you something."

I look at him and he looks at me. "What is it?" I ask.

He leads me to a bench and we sit facing towards each other. He looks me in the eye and says, "I work for a group that...fights crime." He says hesitantly.

"Like the police?"

"No, not really. Um, how do I explain this to a muggle?"

I gasp. "Did you just say muggle?"

His eyes widen. "I shouldn't have said that. I should not have said that." He sighs and says, "Well, now that I've already said it, a muggle is a person..." He starts.

"I know what a muggle is!" I pause. "Are you saying...you're a wizard?" I say, astounded that those words left my mouth.

"No, I'm a Squib...do you know what a Squib is?" He asks, uncertain.

"Yeah! So, you're a Squib?" I ask, absolutely flabbergasted. "And magic is...real?"

"Yes." He says.

I take a deep breath. "Wow. That's...just...wow." I say at a loss for words.

"I know it's a lot to take in." He says.

"No, it's okay." I say. "So, you fight crime?"

"Well, there's a very powerful witch coming to power in New York. Her name is Cora. We thought she was gone when another witch killed her, but apparently she came back from the dead. We don't know how, but she's attacking New York every week. She's the one controlling the odd weather."

"The snowstorm?" I ask.

"All of them. Here's what my work group has figured out so far." He takes out a notebook and flips a few pages. "Her first attack was on a Monday, Labor Day. We were at the mall."

"Yes, I remember that day. It was raining, wasn't it?" I say.

"Right. The second attack was the week after that on Friday. We went to the barbecue party at Robin's house and we had to run back to my car in the rain."

"Oh yeah." I say, nodding my head.

"The next attack was on a Thursday the week after. It was sleeting."

"Yep. We went to Broadway and Seventh after it stopped, right?"

"Yeah. And the final attack was this big snowstorm on Tuesday. So, we think, her next attack will be on..."

"Wednesday." I finish. "This Wednesday?" I ask.

"We believe so. If we don't stop her now, imagine the amount of damage she could create, probably even more than with the weather."

I nod. "So, how are you going to stop her?"

"We have a plan. If we start it tonight, she should be gone by Monday." He pauses. "But, that means when we're done here, we have to go back to Maine."

"Maine? Why are you going there?"

"That's where our headquarters is."

I take a shaky breath. "So, you're leaving?"

"I'm sorry, Emma. I'm so sorry. I couldn't help myself. When I first saw you in your yellow bug..." I see a tear fall onto his cheek and tears start forming in my eyes. "I was really reluctant to come to New York. I thought I would hate city life. But when I saw you everyday, you made my life so much better." The tears start falling from my eyes. "I know I shouldn't have let myself have feelings for you, but I couldn't stop." He looks into my eyes and I see that he's scared. He's afraid to lose me. I place my hand on his cheek and rub the tears away with my thumb. I lean in and kiss him, as if to say, It's okay. He kisses me back softly, which I take as a Thank you. He pulls away and says, "I don't deserve you, Emma."

"Don't say that. We can figure this out." I say, trying to comfort both of us. We get up and I take his hand and interlace our fingers. I smile up at him and he smiles back. We walk back to my apartment talking about other things to keep our minds off what just happened, but I keep thinking that this won't work out. And I can't bear the thought of losing him.
