When we get home, I tell Henry I'm going to take a nap and I go to my room. I close the door and take out the piece of paper from my pocket. I see a phone number, which I was hoping for. I smile as I type the number into my phone. "Killian Jones." I say quietly to myself. I place my phone on the bedside table and drift to sleep.
----
The following day, I drop off Henry at school and call Regina on my way to work. "Hey, Regina."
"Emma, nice to hear from you. Listen, I've got news."
"So do I. You go."
"Okay, well, I was at this restaurant with my work friends and one of my co-workers invited her husband and his friends and...I met someone."
I gasp. "Really? That's amazing! I'm so happy for you."
"Thanks. His name is Robin. He's really hot and sweet, so it's kind of great."
I laugh. Regina has had a really unlucky love life. She went through a lot of boyfriends during college until she finally found the right guy, Daniel. They were so cute together and he proposed to her. But, five months after the engagement, she got a call telling her that Daniel had died in a car accident. Regina was depressed for months. I was there during those first few tough weeks, and it was terrible. I felt so bad for her because she kept saying she could never love anybody again. But with this new man, maybe things could change.
"But, seriously Regina. I'm so glad you feel happy again."
"Yeah, but what about you? What did you want to tell me?"
"Well, yesterday I saw Killian again-"
She scoffs. "Where, the lingerie section at Macy's?"
I burst out laughing. "No. Actually it was at the mall. He gave me his phone number."
"Nice. I'm glad you found him."
I'm surprised by this soft comment. "Really?"
"You're happiness is my happiness. Good luck on your next date."
"Well, it's not exactly a date..." I say.
"Yes it is. Don't deny it." I can hear her smiling. "See ya."
"Bye." I say before ending the call.
----
After a tiring day at work reading reports about Chemical X, I drive home. Radio on, traffic out, observing the city. It's still cloudy from the thunderstorm yesterday, but you can see bits of blue sky. There's a nice breeze in the air and it's not too cold. While waiting for a light, I decide to take out my phone and text Killian.
Hey it's Emma. Where are you?
A few seconds later I get a reply.
Look to your right.
I turn my head and see his black sports car in the lane next to mine. I smile as he rolls down the window. "Emma!" he says, flashing his devilishly handsome smile.
"Where are you going?" I ask.
"The music store down the road."
I had never been there, but I new what he was talking about. "Alright." The light turns green and he speeds ahead. I enter his lane and follow him to the store. Once I'm parked, I get out and see he's carrying a guitar. "You play?" I ask.
"Yeah. I was just about to get it tuned up again. I've been working on this song, actually."
"Really? I would love to hear it sometime."
"I can play it for you now, if you want." he says.
I nod. "I'd love that."
When he comes back out of the store, we go to a nearby bench and he unpacks the guitar from his case. "I hope you like it."
He strums a few chords and I recognize the song. It's one of my favorites at the moment. Then, he starts singing.
We're a thousand miles from comfort, we have traveled land and sea
But as long as you are with me, there's no place I'd rather be
I would wait forever, exalted in the scene
As long as I am with you, my heart continues to beatAs he continues the song, I can't help but tap my foot to the beat. Something about the music is so magical. The way his guitar complements his voice makes everything else less important. It's just Killian, me, and his guitar. When he gets to the chorus, I can't help but hum along. When he looks over at me, I get embarrassed and stop. He notices right away and says "Sing along, Swan."
"No. I can't sing." And I can't. I sing by myself in the car sometimes, but no one else has heard me sing before. Not even Henry.
"Please?" he asks, still strumming his guitar. "Pretty please with sugar on top?" His eyes are wide and he's grinning madly. Then he drops the smile and says seriously, "For me, Emma."
I try to hide a smile as I hesitate before I say. "Okay. But don't laugh."
"I would never laugh at you." And with that he strums his guitar back to the chorus and we're singing together. I guess we don't sound terrible, and it's kind of relaxing, just letting go of all your worries. I look at him the whole time and I'm smiling like crazy. He's staring into my eyes, but I don't look away. I keep mine fixed on his.
When I am with you, there's no place I'd rather be.
The song comes to an end and we both smile at each other. "That was amazing, Emma."
I blush and say, "Thanks for the song, Killian. It's one of my favorites."
"I'm glad." He stands up and I do the same. "Can't wait to do this again."
"Yeah." Suddenly, he takes both my hands in his and I look down at our hands. I look back up at his eyes and he smiles, but it's a sad kind of smile. "Is anything wrong?"
"No," he says and squeezes my hands before letting go and puts a big smile on. "See you tomorrow."
