CHAPTER ONE - EYES LIKE JEWELS

"(y/n)," you heard from beneath you. While standing there up high on the wooden ladder, you turned your head to see the smiling face of your best friend.

You laughed and put down the basket of flowers that you were using to make the flower garlands that were now decorating the whole square.

"(f/n), what are you doing here?" you laughed. "I thought you had to decorate the city gate."

"I snuck away," your friend said. "I assumed it would be way more fun if I helped you instead."

"(f/n)!" you said. "This is important! The pharaoh won't visit Anpet every day!"

Your friend rolled their eyes. "Whatever. He will only visit our city so he can show off his new fiancé. I honestly don't care," your friend said.

"Well, the Gods will not be pleased if we don't have a warm welcome for the pharaoh," you said. "You better get back to the city gate.

"They already finished decorating it," your friend said. "Come down that ladder, the pharaoh can be here any minute."

You sighed. "I hope he likes the flowers."

"Of course he will. And otherwise, he will be gone soon. He's only here for a day. You did a great job with those flowers," your friend said. "I heard he loved lotus blossoms."

"From who did you hear that?" you asked.

Your friend shrugged. "I don't know anymore. I just heard it."

You nodded and came down the ladder. You put the basket with the rest of the flowers down on the ground.

"Don't worry, I will take care of the ladder. You should go home and dress up," your friend said as (he/she) picked up a lotus blossom and put it in your hair.

You smiled. "Thanks," you said.

"No problem," your friend said. "I'll be waiting here for you."

You hugged your friend, and soon you got on your way home. It wasn't a long walk, because your house was near the cities big square. Almost every day, there was a market, and the square was filled with animals, food, clothes, fabric and spices. But today, the square was empty. The pharaoh would visit a few cities to introduce his new queen Olympia, a princess from Sparta, a city located oversea, in Hellas. Everything had to look perfect, because the pharaoh was seen as a god.

"(y/n), you're finally home," your mother said as you arrived home. "Quick, go put on your best dress."

"Yes, mother," you said and you quickly went to your room to put on your long, white dress with the golden neckline. You had always loved that dress, and you actually only wore it on special occasions.

"You look stunning," your mother said as she looked at you from your doorway. "And what a beautiful flower in your hair."

You smiled and touched the flower. "Thanks."
