Atem didn't move. He was just staring at you with those wide eyes, almost like he was confused that you were standing there.
So many questions appeared in your head. Why didn't he free you last night, why had he been so dominant over you, and why was he acting like you were a ghost at the moment?
Then he started to move. He brushed the curtain out of his way and he walked up to you, still in disbelief.
"You're here..." he said softly.
"Of course I am," you said. "But thanks to somebody who did want to free me from those dungeons."
Atem looked even more confused than he did before. He just stared in the distance.
"I don't understand... I thought..." he mumbled.
He turned around and massaged the skin between his eyebrows with his index finger and his thumb.
"Olympia told me they found a note in your room. It said that you left for the city of Waset for obvious reasons," he said.
"Atem, are you saying you don't remember what happened late last night?" you said, hurt.
"(y/n), I drank so much, believing I would never see you again and having to spend my life without you. I just drank until I would laugh at myself while looking in the mirror, in between of my crying," he said.
"Atem..." you said. Although maybe you shouldn't, you felt sorry for him.
"I am so sorry, (y/n). If what I did to you last night what I thought was a dream, I know you can never forgive me. I just couldn't think about anything else but you... I just needed you so badly, and then I found you while wandering, and I just couldn't resist...!" Atem said. He turned around, and you saw the two wet lines on his face that went from his eyes to his chin.
"I understand it if you don't want to see me anymore. What I did... If I really did what I did..."
Atem massaged the spot between his eyebrows again and mumbled something.
"I just didn't think I was capable of doing such a thing," he said. "And now... I did it to the love of my life."
You actually had never seen a man cry before. And now, he was crying because he was afraid of losing you because of what he did? Atem, the pharaoh of Egypt, was crying because he loved you?
"Stop crying, Atem," you said. "No need to cry."
"Yes, there is. I just can't believe — (y/n), I'm just not that kind of person, I just didn't think I would ever become such a man, but now I —"
And then you kissed him. On his mouth. Then you realized that he tasted just like the night before. Like the sweetest kind of wine. You wrapped your arms around his neck, his hands moved to your waist, and right now you didn't care whether someone would see you making out with the pharaoh or not.
You loved him.
He lifted you up and walked towards the bed — not to make love but for him to sit down on so you could sit on his lap.
Then Atem pulled away for a second and pushed his forehead against yours.
"I promise I will make up for what I did," he said to you.
You felt happy. Even though he hadn't completely forced himself on you last night, not even while he was high on wine and thinking he was dreaming, he felt like he had done you wrong. It was a sign for you that he did love you after all. So you just said it.
"I am really in love with you, Atem."
"Maybe you have already noticed, but... I am really in love with you too, (y/n)..."
And then your lips found each other again. Atem was so sweet right now, the complete opposite of who he had been last night. But this was the Atem you knew, the Atem you had fallen in love with. Now you knew that everything was right again.
But the divine feeling didn't last long. You both pulled back when you heard the sound of the door opening. Not long after that, you heard footsteps and not long after that, Olympia stood in front of you. The look in her eyes: again devastating. But you couldn't figure our whether it was because of you having escaped, of because of you on her fianceé's lap. Or maybe both.
Atem's strong hands snaked around your waist and lifted you up for a little, so you could stand up safely. Then the pharaoh himself stood up, and forced himself in front of Olympia. He moved his mouth towards her ear and said: "I love her. And you know that."
Then he pulled back, and she looked even more mad than she did before.
"You will marry me, Atem. You have to let her go. You're mine," she said.
"You broke my heart," Atem hissed. "Even though I never loved you. Locking (y/n) up in a dungeon was the worst thing you could do right now. You know, I can make you repay what you've done by locking you up in my dungeon at home for the rest of your miserable life."
Olympia's look had changed from furious to petrified.
"I think your father will think different about it. He loves me as his new daughter-in-law. He would be sorry to hear his ties with Hellas will be cut because his son will marry a girl from a little farm city instead of the princess of Sparta," she said without emotion.
"Don't you dare to involve my father in all of this! And if all people of Hellas are like you, I'll be happy to cut the ties with your country myself. Now, get out of my sight," Atem spat.
Olympia stood still. This was the first time you had seen her scared. She just stared at Atem the same way as Atem had stared at you from the balcony.
"Now!" Atem shouted at her.
And then, with her lips pursed together, she left the room.
Atem sat down on the bed again, and took a deep breath. "That really felt good, you know," he said.
You could only smile and laugh at the moment. You were so happy he told that woman the truth. She got what she deserved.
Atem smirked, spread his arms, as in a gesture that you could sit down on his lap again. "Where were we?"
