the inspiration for this chapter is taken from Lemony Snicket's a series of unfortunate events, book 13.
being in the dark not only means having shadowy surroundings, it means not knowing something. for instance, if you were sunbathing in the beach, not knowing that a crab was by your right foot, you would still be in the dark without being in the dark.
it is still quite possible to be in the dark without being in the dark, or be in the dark in the dark, of be neither. but chances you are always in the dark, somehow.
of course, sometimes darkness comes unexpectedly, so you you will look around and suddenly be in the dark about being in the dark in the dark, only for you to look around a little more and find yourself no longer in the dark about being in the dark, but in the dark nonetheless.
