My head felt like it was full of cotton and my eyes could hardly open. I kept them shut and wished my body would move. Why wouldn't it move? I slowly opened my eyes, starting with little slits until they were wholly opened. I tried to turn my head but my neck smarted and suddenly I weak. My arms and legs felt like rubber. I whimpered without meaning to. I felt so...so human. If I could have smiled right then, I would have.
"Nelson?" I called, my throat feeling dry and crusty. How long had I been out? I didn't move my head, but I badly wanted to shake it. "Nelson? Betty?" I hoped like hell that our housekeeper was somewhere near. A few seconds after calling her name, Betty rushed in, her hands going straight to my pulse. It was slow, and that always worried her, but hey, I'm half vampire. I can't help it. "Betty, how long have I been asleep?"
She didn't speak English too well, but she could understand it just as well as any white person. "Señorita, usted haestado durmiendodurante más de undía." My eyes felt like there were baseballs. More than a day? My stomach growled and Betty smiled, and said something about food.
"Si!" I almost yelled. My stomach was cramping I was so hungry. Just a moment before Betty reached the door, Nelson came in, and the look on his face said, "Thought you were dead." My heart swelled. "Nelson." It was just a word, but it had him rushing to me.
"Are you alright, sweetie?" He asked, touching my face, his eyes looking worried, and his face pale.
I blinked for a minute before I realized that he was actually speaking to me. "Yeah, I'm fine. Betty is bringing something to eat, thank the Lord. Do you know what happened?" Obviously, I know what happened. My "master" had stopped the car and everything just went downhill from there.
FOUR DAYS LATER
The knife was held at the vampire's throat. She was a freshly born vampire and thinking I was human, kept snapping at me. I hissed at her, the sound coming out sounding like a cat. I didn't flinch as she bit at me. I nick her throat. "Tell me what I want to know." She thrashed. I'd have to say, fresh vampires are only "stronger" because they're unpredictable. My hold tightened on her and I shifted the gun at the back of her head to the base of her skull. "Listen here, you low-life, vampire, my master is the most powerful vampire you'll ever meet. You better stop squirming and tell me everything you know about Lucas Trust."
She stilled. It was either my lie or the name. I doubt it was the lie. "Mister Trust. He is the...the scariest. I know him, personally. He lives in England, and he comes to America to touch base with this "pets". He has them all over the world. He has a special one though. He calls her Sunshine Adrian. He says she's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen and he wants to be with her for all of his days."
"He says she's trying to kill him. He doesn't understand why, and neither do the other vampire girls. Mister Trust is the most handsome guy ever created into a vampire. Have you seen him? Do you know him?" Sunshine Adrian? The crazed man has never even spoken expect for the first time I came here! My jaw was clenched and just as I was about to ask my second question, Nelson strolled into the alleyway.
"Adrian? Adrian?" My guard fell just for a second and suddenly the girl had me pressed to the wall, hissing at my face. My knife was thrown across the ally and my gun was knocked from my hand. She went for my throat and I knew it was over. I shut my eyes tightly as Nelson cursed and I heard footsteps. Nelson was probably going to get help, but it was too late. After this girl bit me, I'd be full vampire and there was no hiding what I really was.
Before the vampire lunged for my throat, I saw something flick out of the corner of my eyes. It glinted and I saw that it was my gun.
