"Winter break begins NOW!" I cheered as Andy and I flopped on my couch. "I can't believe sophomore year is a third of the way over!"
"Me either," Andy replied in a distracted tone. We sat in silence until he decided to speak two minutes later. "Allie, what would you do if Abbie was hurt and you knew there was nothing you could do to help her?"
"What do you mean, Andy? Where is this coming from? Abbie is fine."
"I know Abbie is, but Kayden isn't. It was just a what-if."
I stared at him in confusion. Moving closer, I asked, "Andy, what's wrong with Kayden?"
"He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. He was doing really well with chemo treatments; and for a while, his cancer was gone. Last week, they found another tumor. They say it's too late for treatment." He paused trying to hold back tears. I wrapped my arms around him, not knowing what to say. "They said he has two weeks to two months left. That was a week ago. I could lose my brother any time."
"Then why are you here, Andy?"
"Because I can't do this without you," the tears finally falling.
"Then let's go." I grabbed his keys and headed to his truck.
