Kathy looked at all of us intensely, assigning us to about 35 vocal teachers. She assigned us each individually based on looks and her feels.
From there on, I was alone with a few other trainees that were stuck in Kathy's hands. All the others were already grouped with other vocal teachers. It looked like she didn't know what to do with us.
"You two go with Michelle." Kathy says checking her clipboard. Now I was the only one left. She checked my dorm tag. "Dorm C" she mumbled to herself. "Why do I have a different feeling with you? Come with me." She walks off. I slowly drag my feet, following her.
"I told every vocal teacher to give me the best out of their 5 trainees. Let me tell you a little secret." She says as I sit down in her office. "There are over 700 trainees here, and about 100 are in the special project. At first, you saw about 175 trainees. There are 3 classes, which means-" she hesitated to do the math
"525." I said, softly.
"Thank you, 525 are in dorms a-d. How many floors does each dorm have?"
"3." I replied.
"That means.."
"About 131 trainees are in each dorm, and 44 are in each floor. Each room has 6 girls so that means there are 7 rooms in each floor." I interrupted. She nodded in satisfaction.
"It's good that you know." Kathy whispers. "You are going to compete with 524 trainees. This will be fun to watch." She says mysteriously. "Sing your best song." I started singing Who Says (my audition song) and she stopped me halfway.
"This is not your best, I want your real best." I was really confused in what she wanted. Jennie said I sang this the best. I recalled back to the moment she told me to sing Into the New World. Maybe that's what Kathy wanted too. I started softly singing the song. She smiled when I finished.
"Why didn't you sing this when I told you to sing your best?" She asked.
"My vocal teacher told me that I sang Who Says the best." I blurted out of nervousness.
"Your vocal teacher is smart. You sing Into the New World a lot better than Who Says. It's just your Korean is very bad. When they kept you in for auditions and asked you to sing more, did you sing Into the New World?" She asked. I nodded. "What else did you sing?"
"Give your Heart a Break, Mine-"
"Sing those too." She said. I began singing.
"Your singing is very good. Who's your vocal teacher?" Kathy asked. I hesitated. What if she knew Jennie? I'd be dead meat.
"Why are you hesitating? Is she someone illegal? From a different company? Just tell me I don't mind." I didn't say anything, I can not expose Jennie to the spot.
"Is it someone named Jennie?" She asked. I flinched.
"H-How'd you know?" I asked.
"Jennie is my little sister." I gasped. "No wonder. She knows exactly what I want to get you to the path of fame. She trained you good."
"Did she train anyone that's famous now?" I curiously asked.
"Jennie is young, so no. She moved to the US to pursue her own dream, to teach people like you. She wanted to travel, she didn't want to be famous but she loved to sing, she wanted to help someone chase their dream in becoming famous, but while traveling. That's why she didn't stay in Korea."
