“Back straight Miss Ackles!”
I imminently straightened my posture as I started at the sheet of music in front of me. I’ve been playing this piece for two hours and I’m pretty sure my hands are beyond cramping.
“Remember Noah, I want this piece to be perfection and perfection requires practice.” My piano teacher Ms. Agnès said in front of me with her hands crossed behind her as she paced back and forth.
“Yes ma’am.” I mumble. It was already 2:30 and I’m tired, hungry, and ready for my bed. Tomorrow was the last day of summer and I really did not want to spend it icing my injured hands.
Last day of summer only means the first day of school.
Great.
Not only was I going to school but a new school in a new town where I would have to make new friends and try to get on new teacher’s good sides. This was going to be hell.
“Stop Miss Ackles.” Agnes said, her French accent thick with annoyance.
‘Finally’ I think as I cradle my right hand, that one was in the most pain.
“That is enough for today, now I would like you to take your music to practice at home. I expect perfection Noah.”
I nodded my head and grabbed my music sheets and purse before heading out the door. Glancing around I saw my mom’s silver Lexus parked in one of the parking spaces. Good, the sooner I get out of here the better.
“How was practice?” my mother asked.
I gave her a tired smile before buckling my seatbelt “It went….normal.”
“That’s great darling, I’m so glad we found Sophia in this small town, I can tell you’re playing has improved. I was concerned when we moved from New York that you wouldn’t have a great instructor like that Julliard teacher.” she said before rambling on about Julliard.
I nodded my head and pretended to be interested but in reality I just wanted my bed.
“Remember Noah, you need to stay focused this year in school we don’t want your future to be flushed away by one lousy grade.” She grinned before her phone began to ring.
After a few minutes of hearing my mom on a business call we were finally home where I couldn’t help but sprint across the driveway and into our house.
“Good afternoon Miss Noah.” Nana, our maid, called out as I ran to my room.
“Hi Nana.” I replied as I shut the door to my room and collapsed on my bed.
Taking out my music sheet from my bag I couldn’t help but glance over at the music once more before blowing my bangs out of my eyes and frowning.
Lesson today had been terrible and I hope Sophia isn’t like that every practice.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts as Nana came in the door with a tray in her hands with two mugs sitting on it. “Hot chocolate my dear?” she asked.
I grinned and nodded my head, Nana seemed to always know how to make me feel better. She was like the grandmother I actually wanted, my other Grandparents were posh and stuck up. I didn’t really like to be around them.
Nana handed me a cup while sitting on my bed with hers in her hand “Now what’s wrong my darling?”
I sighed and held my cup in my hand “I don’t know, I guess I’m just nervous about starting school on Monday. You know new school and what not.” I admit.
She grinned and wrapped one hand around me “My dear, you are an amazing girl, I’m sure you will have no problem adjusting here.”
I smiled at Nana before taking a sip of my drink.
“NANA!” my mother’s voice called from downstairs, startling me and Nana.
She grinned before standing up “Duty Calls.”
I saluted her before getting up to set my cup down. I crossed my arms and looked around my pale white room. I had a dresser, vanity, a queen sized bed in the corner, along with a large book case full of different books, and a side table. It was very plain besides the quilt that covered my bed. We just moved across states to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for my dad’s job. He’s a famous architect and I guess business brought us here. I could tell my mother had a great dislike for this place but I sort of liked it, it was quiet.
I should really decorate this place soon.
Sighing I went over to my book case and getting a random book before plopping on my bed and began to read.
“Noah, dinner time!” Nana called from downstairs causing me to jump. I glanced at the clock on my side table and noticed it was already 6:30. Time had really flown by.
Groaning I went downstairs to the dining room where my mother and father were waiting already seated in their seats.
Our dining room tabled filled twelve people but there was only three of us, it made no sense plus we rarely had people over.
I sat across from my mom and on my dad’s left hand side. We sat in silence as one of our chefs brought in our food.
“So how was your piano lesson? Is Ms. Sophia as good as they say they are?” my father asked glancing at me from the corner of his eye as he cut his steak.
I nodded my head “Yea-“
“Of course she is love, Sophia Agnès is the best piano teach in town. I’ve already seen progress in Noah.” My mother blurted out, interrupting me.
“Is that so?” he said turning his head to smile at me.
Apparently I am my father’s pride and glory, his own prodigy. Almost everything I did was amazing in his eyes, especially my musical abilities.
“Yeah Dad, Sophia is pretty great.” I mumble.
“Good, at least my money is going towards a good cause. We want you to get that scholarship. It’s you’re dream to become a famous pianist and what my little wants she gets.” He declared proudly. My mother nodded her head in agreement beside him.
“Of course.” I said taking a giant and unlady like bite of my steak.
“Noah please, at least act lady like at the table.” She stated while rolling her eyes.
I stared at her before taking one more unlady like bite and getting out of my chair “I have to go study my music.” I say and headed upstairs.
‘Please, please, please let me get what I want and let this be a good year.’ I think as I laid in my bed that night.
