Storm's POV
The sound of a dog's desperate whine cut through the silence of the forest, awakening me from a much needed slumber. I sat up in the tree carefully, so not to break the branch I perched on, and looked out into the forest to see nothing, only a giant ball of dirty white fur at the ground beneath me, clawing at the trunk of the tree in an attempt to reach me.
A smile made it's way onto my face as I recognized the big white dog. I swung my legs over the side of the branch and braced myself as the great husky backed away to watch me with a tilted head. I put my hands on either side of my waist, clutching the branch for support, and I pushed off. I held onto the branch like someone would a jungle gym bar and when I was ready, I let go.
I tumbled to the forest floor. My ankle throbbed with such force, but I managed to ignore it as I felt something wet on my cheek. I laughed loudly as my vision was clouded with a mass of white fur.
"I love you, too, boy," I giggled.
Albion barked back as if to say he loved me, too, and I smiled and pushed the dog away from me.
"We have to get going, boy," I said, patting his head.
He happily panted and circled around to my other side, his favourite side, as we began to walk.
***
He heard it long before I did. As we walked along the broken highway, Albion began to bark at something far down the road that my eyes couldn't make out, and neither could my ears. At first I thought it to be nothing more than a Dead One, but that assumption was wrong.
As we neared whatever Albion was barking at, I realized it was the sound of an engine running. The sound was getting closer and closer.
