I open my eyes to a bright white room, the light hurting my eyes and the white walls seeming to shine. The beeping from beside the bed annoys me, and I look around the room, before locking eyes with someone I never expected to see.
"Nick?" My voice was gravelly and scratchy, and my throat felt painfully dry.
"Ren. Are you alright?" The new nickname surprised me, but I liked it so I didn't say anything about it.
I nod in response to his question, watching as he grabs a cup of water from the bedside table. He hands it to me and I gratefully take it from him. I take a huge gulp, before placing it on the table again.
"Are you hungry? Do you need anything?" He asks, looking ready to stand from the chair he was currently sitting in.
"No, I'm- I think I'm ok. How long have I...?" I trail off, knowing he would understand.
"A few days. We were all so worried about you, we missed our plane home." He says, frowning slightly. "Zak was terrified you were going to be like that forever, comatose. He practically never left your side, except when we promised not to leave you alone until he came back. He left about half an hour ago, and should be back any second."
I nod, fiddling with my fingers. I didn't know what to say.
Zak likes me. Could he really? Why else would he never want to leave my side? Why else would he care so much about me that he would missed his flight home?
As if reading my mind, Nick smirks and nods. "He likes you a lot. I've never seen him this worried about anyone before."
A blush coats my cheeks and just then, Zak walks through the door.
"Speak of the devil, and he shall appear." I say in my slightly raspy voice and a smile spreads across my face as his eyes light up when he sees me awake.
"Ren!" He smiles, racing to my side and Nick quietly excuses himself.
"Hey there, tiger."
He sits beside me, his hand quickly grabbing mine lightly. I then realize that it's the one that had fallen in the glass. It was freshly bandaged and didn't sting as bad, so I knew that Nick hadn't been lying about about the fact that I was out for a while. Zak must have noticed that I was staring at my hand because he presses a soft kiss to my bandaged palm, looking me in the eyes.
"He did this." He said it more of a statement, and I barely nodded before he pulled away and sat back in the chair.
"Zak, I'm ok. I'm not dead." I whisper, trying to find any bright side in this situation. "We got evidence that night, right? It was all on camera!"
When I see the look on his face, I instantly knew something was wrong.
"We didn't catch it. The damn thing must have drained the batteries so that it had enough energy to hurt you. The fucking thing could have killed you, Ren, and you're just sitting here like it's nothing. For evidence? Are you crazy?" He was mad at me, I could tell, but that didn't stop me from looking him directly in the eye and responding as honestly as I could.
"I wouldn't mind dying if it meant something came out of it. Whether that thing is evidence of the paranormal or saving the person I love. Anything is better than dying for nothing, no change, no help. Just, death. That's my greatest fear. To die useless and forgettable."
Zak tilted his head to the side, before nodding slightly.
"I understand where you're coming from, but if you lived, you could do so much more with your life." His eyebrows furrow and I shake my head.
"The reason I haven't died yet is because I have something big to do, something big is going to come out of this interaction. And once it happens, then my life will be complete, and I'll be able to move on to the next."
My eyelids begin drooping, tiredness stiffening in my bones and making me hum.
Being half in consciousness, my mouth decides to speak the first thing that comes to my head.
"Lay with me, Zak."
He moves onto the bed next to me, my body cuddling against his in the small twin bed. My head resting softly on top of his chest and listening to his heart thump made my breathing slow and my heart to align with his. And just like that, I fell asleep with someone who truly cared about.
