Clarissa's POV

17 years later

*******************

I ran after the deer, swerving and jumping around rocks and fallen trees. I was tiring the doe, and soon I would have to drag it back to where my mother is setting up camp for the night. It is going to be a very long walk dragging the deer behind me. I began to gain on the does'  right flank. Soon I was aligned with the deer's stomach.

I swiveled my head to the left, sinking my teeth into the does'  stomach. She cried  out in pain, stopping and falling onto the ground. I walked up to her head and sank my sharp, pearly whites into her tough neck. She struggled for a couple seconds in my grasp, but her suffering soon ended. I felt her blood drain down into my throat.

The warm liquid, soothing my thirst, easing the wolf's thirst for blood.  I shifted and removed the clothes that I had tied onto my ankle, and slipping into the soft fabric. I rapped the rope around the doe's feet and lifted her onto my shoulders. Starting the excruciating walk back to camp. As I began to walk back, my mind went into overdrive.

I started to think about my life. I still have yet to find my mate and get excepted into a pack. We haven't been excepted into a pack, because my mother and I are Alphas. We would be seen as a threat to the current Alpha and Luna of the pack. That causes us to become rouges. The Alpha of the Black Peak Pack, my father, had died in the attack, 17 years ago. That's why my mother was in pain that night. She had gone through the pain of losing her mate.

I hope my mate will love and protect me. As I began to get lost in my thoughts, I hadn't noticed that I was only a few meters away from my mother and Catherine. Catherine had come with us after we had left, simply because she had nowhere else to go. All of her family had died in the attack, she was in the office when I had found her. She was getting her medical bag, and that, is exactly, what saved her life. She carries that bag everywhere now.

I gently put the deer down in front of Catherine and my mother. They looked up content with my picking. It was a lot more work to get a healthy doe, they can run for awhile. I chased this one for about an hour, not counting the weight and trek back to camp. It's a lot, and I mean a lot of work.

"Thanks, sweetheart." my mother exclaimed with hidden pride.  Catherine nodded in appreciation. I turned to walk off, when my mother's voice rang out. "And, where are you going?   It's nearly dusk and I need you to skin the deer." I groaned in response and muttered a fine. Walking over to her, she had a huge smile on her face.

I don't know what has gotten into her here lately, she has been acting rather strange. Instead of her usual mopey self, she's more excited and happy. Like she was with dad. After your mate dies, either, you become a shell of a person or you end up committing suicide. My mom is basically just a shell of her old self. She's basically dead. Weres that have lost their mates, usually only stay alive for their unmated children. They are the only thing they have of their lost ones.

I can't wait to find my mate. To be in the arms of my protector, lover and my most trusted, best friend. I snapped out of my day dreaming and began to skin the doe, by changing my hand into a claw. I took one of my nails and began using it as if it were a knife.

After I had finished, I rushed down to the river to wash up for diner tonight. I managed to get the deer's dried blood off of my body and started to head back into camp when I heard crying. I took of in the direction it was coming from, which, wasn't far from camp. When I reached the noise, I saw my mother crying over something. I put my hand atop of her shoulder, startling her.
