Kelly & Naomi on top, Alyssa, Dylan, and Chris on bottom
(Y'all know how I do. Italics for more than a paragraph are flashbacks)
~ Naomi ~
Multiple lines of light shined on my face, but one directly across my eyelids, caused me to wake up.
I grabbed my small phone, off my nightstand and smiled at the few messages from my one friend which happened to be my best and my family.
I replied to my couple aunts and cousins and checked for what I had left.
Big Bro: wake yo ugly ass up and get ready
Big Bro: nah im playing. not bout the ugly part tho. but im proud of you
Me: Thank you Nairobi. I love you and I'll see you later
Alyssa: ITS OUR DAY HOE!
I laughed a little, but frowned at the last word, yet continued reading.
Alyssa: I'm about to come over so we can get ready and just leave from your house. Unlock the door.
That was around ten minutes ago and she didn't live that far.
I stretched my legs by pointing my toes hard before getting from under the thick covers.
I glanced at the small table next to my bed, picking up the handmade bamboo picture frame that my grandmother wove.
"You'd be so proud," I ran my fingers over the picture.
It was me and Naorobi, who were no more than four and six at the time, sticking our tongues out, with my deceased father doing the same while holding us.
It hurt he couldn't see me walk across the stage, but he chose to serve and fight for our country until he died and I could only respect that.
My thoughts were interrupted by an obnoxious knock on the door.
Knowing it was Alyssa, I hurriedly took my maroon graduation robe out my closet, laying it on my orange and brown designed comforter and shuffled down the curved stairs of the quaint, three bedroom home.
I swung the door open and was immediately scooped into the freckle faced, short, curvy, light skinned girl named Alyssa.
"Hey Lys," I giggled as my head sat above hers.
"Why your mom car still here?" she asked, knowing the drill already and taking off her shoes as I closed the door.
"She took off cause a queen is graduating," I put one hand on my hip and accentuating the other in the air dramatically.
"Oh whatever," she laughed, jogging up the stairs with me behind her.
I loved Alyssa but she often made me feel insecure without meaning to.
Although we were built very similar, talked the same, and damn near walked the same, the guys I'm attracted to are always attracted to her.
'Light skin, the right skin' some of the ignorant boys in our school taunted if I wasn't being called a hoe or every other name in the book.
"Mommy mommy," Lys called, slightly galloping down the long hall.
Alyssa's own mother was killed in a home invasion when Lys was little so her dad raised her, and she took a liking to my mom when we met in middle school.
