Chapter 1: Hiding Out

Charlotte's POV

Jonathan and I hoisted up the oak tree outside his window, and jumped through the window. I flung my

arms around him, resulting in a slightly awkward hug. I started sobbing into his shirt.

"Uhh... shhh, shhh. It'll be ok...?"

"*sniffle* N-no, it won't! Y-you can't h-help me... *sniffle* Not if you don't want to die."

"Woah, woah, woah! You mean to tell me that if I help out my best friend, I'll die?" I told Jonathan the story of my mom and my broken arm, and her death threat.

"...and since my mom will figure out you're involved, she'll carry it out on you too."

"This has been going on since when?"

"Since I was about nine."

"You should have told me!" I put my head down lowly in shame. How did I let this happen? I always was in denial, thinking mom could change. I need to get out of her hold. Her life. But how the heck was I going to do that when she knows pretty much anywhere that I would go as a safehouse? Except one.
