Jem had enough, she kept yelling at her sister to go away. Her mom got mad at her over nothing, and now is engaged to a sloppy jerk who doesn't act like a father when it comes to her and her sister. She had just wanted to dissapear, gone, poof, she wanted freedom, she wanted to be alone. She took a risk, she left. The one place she knew the one place she could go, the woods. After half an hour of running into the woods, she finally reached a tree house, an old tree house, with a bed and even light's, her and her old best friend's tree house. They spent a whole summer up there, eating berries and getting water from a well near by, this is were Jem would stay, for as long as needed.
The next morning her sister woke up, and went into Jem's room, only to find her stuff gone, and room empty, her sister knew what happend. She couldn't help but go into her room and gather everything, and leave. She knew the hate she had built up inside, before she left she broke stuff, her mom and stepdad were out. When her parent's got home, it would look like a kidnapping. When she reached the tree house, she went inside, her sister was cooking a rabbit, when she saw her, she smiled, for the first time in months, Jem smiled.
Jem's sister, Conny, asked how she got out. Then Jem smiled and said "I gathered everything, I was gonna take you, but, I didn't want to wake you, I knew you'd find me." Conny smiled and said, "Mom and Hank were out so I gathered everything and made it looked like we got robbed, and kidnapped, So we can be together in peace." The girls smiled and ate their breakfast. " Why were they out? Were they having 'Hank and Mommy time'" asked Jem as she playfully mimicked her mother. Jem was only twelve, but she was also free.
