Jem taught Conny all she knew, they got used to the woods, going into the city rarely. One day Conny asked, "Are we gonna go back now, I miss mom so much!" Jem looked at her sister and said "I would love to go back, I just think mom is gonna be mad. Mad that we ran away, mad at me, mad at you, I just cant go back. You can though, If you really want too." Conny looked at Jem, the tree house got quiet, after a while, Conny piped out "If I'm gone, you will be so alone, if your alone you could get hurt, I will stay, but for right now, you gotta think about leaving. After the next full moon, I'm out of here, you can't spend your life in a cage." After that Conny stood up, grabbed her stone knife, and left to look for dinner.

Jem stood up after a while, her sister had no reason to stay, Jem did, all she thought about was how her mom betrayed her trust. She felt alone, scared, helpless, she felt...unwanted. Later on Conny came back in with a rabbit, squirrel, and berries, Jem was so hungry she could eat a bear, or a rabbit, both ways meant food. Conny and Jem sat there, didn't talk didn't even look at each other, the room was tense. Finally Jem said, "You know I can live by myself, I'm eighteen now, almost nineteen, you can leave, I'm staying! I'm tried to deal with that world, with that life, but I just can't!"                                  "You can't or you won't?" Conny asked. Jem burst out in tears, all that anger built up inside, she never let it out. "Lets go home, please, you can explain everything, I'll explain my part, but please?" Jem looked up at her sister, for once, she saw hope in her sisters eyes. "I'll think about it." Jem said, she wondered if all that her sister said was true. The next morning, her sister woke up to a loud buzzing sound. Conny was back home, and Jem took her home.
