Maya POV

It's been a couple of weeks since Lucas got sick and everything is going pretty well, except something is, well different. I can't put my finger on it, but something's off. Anyway, it's Tuesday morning and I'm on my way to Riley's. I go in and then we leave for school. The morning goes by uneventfully because, well, I have all my boring classes in the morning. Math, science, French, economics. You might wonder, Maya, why the heck are you taking French? Well, here at good ole' JQA High School, we're required to take a foreign language. Anyway, now it's time for lunch. I haven't seen Lucas, Zay, or Farkle yet today, but that's because all of my classes with them are in the afternoon. I walk into lunch and see Riley and the boys at our usual table. I sit down and am immediately bombarded with today's dilemma.

"Farkle's having a midlife crisis." Zay says.

"It's not a midlife crisis, those happen when your like, 40. This is just a crisis." Farkle says.

"Well then, what's wrong?" I ask.

"I'm a potato surrounded by good-looking people." Farkle says.

"Oh Farkle, you're not a potato, and even if you were we don't care what you look like." Riley says.

"Easy for you to say, you're perfect Riley." Farkle says. He's right, Riley is perfect. She's never worn an ounce of makeup in her life and she always looks flawless. Granted, part of the reason she doesn't is because she's afraid to ever since the eyelash curler incident, but still, I wear makeup all the time and I'll never look as good as her.

"Well, thank you but that's not why you date me. You date me because of who I am." Riley says. The boys all chuckle. I look over and see Mr. Matthews eyeing us carefully. Huh. "The only reason you think I'm good looking is because you care about me. No matter what I look like you'd still think I was pretty."

"Yeah well Riley that's easy for you to say, you're not paler than paper and stuck with eyes that somehow got sucked into your face." Farkle says.

"Farkle, I love your face and I love your eyes, but most of all I love you for who you are, and I hope you love me for me and not just for how I look." Riley says.

"Well Riles, if I looked in the mirror every morning and saw what you see, I think I'd feel a lot better." Farkle says.

"Really, you think I get all of my confidence from how I look?" Riley asks.

"And the fact that you're perfect yeah I think that puts a little spring in your step."Just then Mr. Matthews rushes over.

"Don't cut your hair!" He shouts, then hurries away. We all look at each other with confused looks.

"But you're right, I love you for who you are, not for what you look like." Farkle says. Riley smiles and kissed Farkle on the cheek and we all went back to our food. I didn't say anything for the rest of lunch and went to art in silence. For the entire class one thought loomed over me: Riley's perfect, I am not. Finally, it's time for history, my last class. I walk into Matthews class and sit in my usual spot .

"Helen of Troy. A woman who was thought to be so beautiful,  she started a war." Mr. Matthews says. Great. Another story about a woman who's perfect. I.e., not me. I listen to Mr. Matthews drone on and on about the Trojan war. Finally the bell rings and I head for the door.

"Homework at my house?" Riley asks. I nod and we head to her house. We go to her room and we start our homework, but my eyes drift over to the mirror, mentally pointing out all of the flaws on my face.

"Maya? Hello, Earth to Maya? What's wrong?" Riley asks. I sigh and look at her.

"You heard what Farkle said, you're perfect, without ever wearing an ounce of makeup. I wear makeup almost everyday and I'll never look as good as you." I say, looking at the ground. Just then, Topanga walks in.

"Oh Mom, perfect timing," Riley says, "Come here, Maya needs help." Riley motions for her to come sit with us in the bay window.

"Whats wrong?" Topanga asks.

"Maya's insecure about how she looks." Riley states.

"What? Maya, in all the time that I've known you I can't remember you ever looking in a mirror. You had this confidence in yourself in that's one of the things I admire about you." Topanga says.

"Oh come on, everybody in highschool cares about how they look." I say.

"But up until now you never did. Your world has been completely rocked by something that made you feel not perfect." She says.

"This isn't me is it?" I ask.

"Well, not the Maya I know. But, obviously you girls are at that age where you're going through changes." She says with a smile. I give her a hug and smile.

"Thank you" I say.

"You know I went through something like this when I was your age. Cory was insecure about how he looked, so I cut my hair to prove a point. After that I became obsessed with making sure I looked good." Topanga explains.

"That's why he told me not to cut my hair." Riley says with understanding.

"Wait, was Farkle..?"

"Yep"

"And that's what started all of this?"

"Yep"

"Oh well anyway, you know who snapped me out of it?" Topanga asks me.

"Who?"

"Shawn." She says. I smile. Funny how things work out like that, huh.

"Hey Riles, I'm gonna head home," I say, getting up, " see you tomorrow?" She nods and I head home. I walk into the apartment and see Shawn. I walk up and give him a hug.

"What's this for?" Shawn asks as he hugs me back.

"Being awesome." I say as I head to my room.

AN

I updated! Omg! I think one of my problems was I hadn't watched a gmw episode in forever, so there was nothing to inspire me.

Hope you enjoyed!
