Luke's POV

I was heading over to Avery's house to bring her jacket that she had left at school on Friday. As I was walking I noticed Michael walking very fast towards his house. I didn't think anything about it, so I kept walking. I reached Avery's door and knocked. Nothing. I rang the doorbell. Nothing. "Avery!? It's Luke, you forgot your jacket at school a couple of days ago!" I heard a soft shuffling and the door barely creaked open. A small figure poked her head out. Her cheek had a slight cut and her eyes were red and puffy. She had a tear stained face and a messy bun. "Y- yes?" She sniffled. "Oh um.. You forgot this." I said holding out the jacket for her to grab. She opened the door more and popped her arm out of the door. Her wrist was crusted over with blood and there were dark purple marks left on her forearm. I could tell she was trying to hide them but she didn't do such a swell job.

I shoved the door, careful not to hit her with it. I tugged her close to me, wrapping my arms around her shoulders and holding her head to my chest. I embraced her fragile body in a warm hug. She accepted it and began to cry into my chest. "Was this Michael?" I mumbled and she replied with a nod. "C'mon, lets get you cleaned up." I grabbed her arm and she squealed in pain. "Oh my god. I- I'm sorry I didn't mean to hurt... You. Fuck sorry." I turned away but she turned me back around. "Will you carry me? I don't think I can walk up the stairs." She whispered hoarsely. I picked her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist. She rested her head on my shoulder and closed her eyes.

I carried her upstairs to the bathroom and began treating her wounds. "Do you wanna know a secret?" I said and she nodded. I reached down and pulled up my sleeve revealing my scars. "It gets better, trust me." I said. She smiled for the first time since I've been here. And it was a true smile, her soft dimples showing, her bright green eyes sparkling, and that little giggle she has.

I dabbed her cheek with a warm cloth to cleanse the area. I placed some healing cream and a small bandage over the cut and proceeded to wipe the rest of her face gently and pat it dry. She had her eyes closed and I took this slight moment to look at her. Just stare at the beauty she has. No makeup, messy hair, pajamas. And she still was stunning.

I like Avery. I've liked her for awhile. And I remedied it by bullying her. I would push and shove her into the lockers. I would pull her hair, knock her down, cuss her out. She didn't deserve it. No one did. She deserves much more than a worthless dick like me. But I've gotten better. I've changed for her. I quit smoking. I quit hanging with my jerk friends and I quit slacking in school. All my grades are now B's or C's compared to the all F's that lined my report card.

"Hey" I said almost a whisper. Her eyes fluttered open and she raised her eyebrows, "Yea?" I laughed, "well I didn't want you falling asleep on me here." She smiled and slid off the bathroom counter. We just stood there awkwardly until I spoke, "I uh.. I think I'll get going. I'm sorry for what happened. You can always talk to me." I turned around and began to walk into the hallway. She let me get to the stairs before she attempted to yell. "Wait!" I spun around and she was shuffling towards me. "Luke? Will you um. Will you stay here with me. Just in case you know, Michael comes back." I nodded and she hugged me. I held her small body against mine and when she pulled away I kissed her cheek where the bandage was. "My mum always told me kissing the boo boos made them feel better." She smiled, "I definitely feel better, Thank you." She said barely audible.

She went and laid down on the couch and curled up into a blanket letting small sniffles escape the fabric. I walked over to her and tapped her shoulder. She looked at me before sitting up and allowing me to sit down. She laid her head on my chest and slung her arms around my torso. This felt amazing, to finally have the girl I want in my arms. "Avery?" I said softly. She tilted her head up and looked at me, "yeah?" I think she must have had a slight ideas as to what I was going to do. She closed her eyes and waited for my lips to hit hers. I pressed them gently to hers and placed my hand on the side of her face.

She lightly pushed on chest and removed her lips from mine. "I want to but I can't kiss you. It's too soon, I'm upset and heartbroken and I don't want to make you feel like my rebound. Can we just take it slow please?" She looked down staring at her hands. It was quiet for a long moment until I spoke up, "um yeah, I understand. We can take things slow, I don't mind." She looked up and I showed a small smile in which she returned. "Thanks Luke"
She laid back on to my chest, "Anytime, beautiful." I smiled to myself and I could feel her body relax.
