We had been walking for a while and I could tell my brother was exhausted. We had to walk fast, but try to stay hidden the best we could. He had to be on high alert for anything that might sound like pursuers. We had left the cave when it was as safe as it could get and we were headed for what Levi said was a safe house that they had set up just in case. He had forgotten about it in his panic, but going there was still a huge risk and the only plan we got.
"How close are we?" I whispered just as on edge as he was.
"Not close enough" he hissed as he twitched his head to listen and started walking faster. It was hard keeping up with him, even though I could tell he was trying not to walk too fast for me. I had a tight grip on his hand so he could drag me along faster and help me from tripping in the thick brush.
"I hope you know where you're going" I stated as we whipped around a large tree and seemed to go back in the direction we came from.
" I'm trying to confuse them, but I doubt it will work very well. I'm just trying to buy us some time. I don't know how long it will take for the news of us to reach the contact and it would be best if he had some advanced warning." He explained.
"Why? Who is the contact?" I asked very curious who it was that we could trust our lives with.
"He is one of the higher ups in a nearby pack and a good friend of our father's. That's all I can say for now."
"How do you know we can trust him?" I inquired.
"I don't, but dad trusts him and I trust dad, so we will just have to have faith because it's our only option at this point."
"I understand..." I said as I watched him transform into his wolf and motioned for me to get on his back quickly. He must of heard something big because as soon as I was on he started off so fast I almost tumbled off his back and I had to close my eyes to keep the wind from stinging them. I felt a rush of cold and then I was soaking wet, I opened my eyes and saw we were swimming in a fairly deep river. The water was icy cold and I was shivering so bad it hurt.
"Can we please go to the ...sshore" I stuttered from the cold, as he started swimming down river instead of across. His wolf grunted and then tilted it's head towards what I assume to be the direction we just came from.
I turned to see a cloud of dust seeping out of the forest. They found us or were close to it. If we could sneak across the border into a different pack it would buy us some time. We have a chance of slipping through unnoticed, but a large search party would be found and question as soon as they crossed the border giving us time to disappear.
Then without warning Levi dived under the water and I inhaled a good amount of it. I forced myself not to let go and get air. We stayed under water for what felt like forever, but was probably only a good minute. When I was sure I was about to pass out we resurfaced. I tried to get air, I just inhaled more water. The river was very rapid and choppy now and I was coughing hard still trying to get air, I started losing my grip on Levi. I tried to regain my grip, but my hands were numb.
"Heelpp" I choked, then everything blurred and I lost my grip and started to sink. I just realized I don't know how to swim, this is how it's going to end...
