One very obvious tip when trying to acheive healthy hair is to avoid heat from hair tools. However, you may be here because youre at a stage where you want to see your length or just enjoy being versatile with your hair. Plus, it's SUMMERRRR.
Here are some tips for straightening your hair.
1)Always heat protect your hair. I will list a few good heat protection products down below.
2) Use a frizz controlling product such as John Freida. Some come 2 in 1 wityh heat protectants. This is an optional product, but it may help acheive straighter results and also help prolong the period of time for which your hair remains straight.
3) Use as little heat as possible. If you can avoid blow drying hair prior to straightening then do so. I will have a chapter coming up on ways to stretch your hair without heat. And I will put a link in this chapter once its up.
Also, when actually going over hair, try not to pass heat over each section more than twice, and keep the heat under 200 degrees celcius as hair brns at 2304) Part smaller sections of hair. This way, you can get straighter results without having to pass heat over hair too many times.
5) Use the comb chase method to acheive straighter results faster. i will put a link of this down below.
Now, you may acheive perfect results, but what you want is to be able to maintain the look without having to constantly apply heat to your hair. (this would result in some burnt out hair boo boo, not cute)
So here are a few ways you can ensure that your hair is kept straight day to day.
1) In humid weather, you may want to avoid leaving straightened hair down as the humity will get to more strands causing frizz.
However, some may see the whole point of straightening hair as to show length, If you still wish to wear your hair down, you can follow step 2
2) Apply an anti frizz serum (usually with humectants) in humid weather to avoid frizz. *A humectant protects the hair from the moisture which would cause it to revert
3) Wrap your hair at night!!!! As if you have a relaxer, wrap your hair around your hair at night to keep if smooth and stratched. Videos on how to do this can be found on Youtube.
4) Once hair is wrapped, sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. The other option is to sleep with a headtie on, preferably satin or silk. For a more sleek look, I would have to advise the scarf over the pillowcase as hair cannot fly away.
5) dont apply water based moisturisers to straightened hair. the predominance of water in the prodeuct will result in a slow but sure build up of frizz. A fantastic alternative for moisture and protection is coconut oil as it is able to penetrate the hair and provide moisture unlike many other oils
6) Unless you want to acheive a certain style, do not braid or twist hair as it will create waves, causing the hair to not be sleek and straight anymore. However, this does not mean the hair has reverted back to its natural state.
7) If you backcomb the hair in order to acheive a particular style, or add hairspray or gels, brush them out with a large paddle brush. This will allow you to avoid huge knots the next day which could result in frizz or hair needing to be washed.
OTHER TIPS!
-When wearing hair down, be cautious of ends rubbing on clothing as this will cause them to dry out and split. Split ends will have to be cut eventually, therefore, for length retention purposes, be cautious. When possible, wear a satin or silk tops or scarf so ends of hair do not harshly rub against a rough, hair- drying material
-Do not oils hair too much. When hair is straight, natural oils from our scalp are able to flow down the hair shaft easier, which is why those with naturally straighter hair often do not moisturise it. If hair is oiled when straighten, you can risk extremely greasy, clogged hair which is NOT ATTRACTIVE BOO BOO.
-Wash and deep condition hair thoroughly before hand in order to have clean straight hair. This will allow hair to be straightened longer as it wont be due for a wash sooner. Also, deep conditioning prepares hair for the use of heat tools
- A great natural and cheap heat protector is grapeseed oil. It doesnt have a smell and it is not too thick or sticky!
Hope this has helped, let me know any topics you guys want me to post on.
