"Meow."

"Meow"

"Meeeeooooowww"

I felt something warm touch my face. I slowly opened my eyes. Two little blue eyes were looking right back at me. It had its paw out stretched towards my face. It was a little black cat. How hard did I party last night. Wait? I didn't party last night.

Suddenly, the memories of everything that had happened to me, hit me like a rock. The lake. The thing trying to drown me. Cadence. I broke down.

My hands started to uncontrollably shake and tears were blurring my sight. My breathing was getting heavier and heavier and my body was tensed up. I couldn't get that terrible memory out of my mind. What was that? How am I still alive?

I heard a soft purr and looked down at the little cat. It was rubbing its head against me. I couldn't help but smile at its attempt to comfort me. I took solace in this little cat. My body loosened up again and I started to gain control of my hands again.

"I see you've met Burt." Cadence's deep, baritone voice echoed throughout the room.

"You named your cat Burt?" I asked, incredulously.

"He named himself."

"That's ridiculous and you know it." I scoffed.

"Whatever you say." He said, beaming his glorious smile at me.

"Thank you for saving me." I breathed.

His smile dimmed and he looked down, twiddling with his thumbs. He looked like he was in an argument with himself. He finally looked up at me, "That shouldn't have happened, I shouldn't have been so careless."

"What do you mean? I was idiot who tried to go swimming!" I shouted.

We both stayed silent for what felt like hours. Then it struck me.

"Oh crap. How long have I been sleeping? Does my mom know I'm here? Where's my phone? No no no no no no no-"

"Only one night.Don't worry, you're mom thinks that you're at Aubry's house. I took care of everything. Calm down, woman." I interjected.

Relief flooded through me. This man is perfect. I relaxed my body and leaned back onto the bed post. It was then that I took notice of how sore my body was and how incessantly my head was throbbing.

"God, this hurts." I mumbled, squeezing my eyes shut and putting my hands to my head.

"Here." Cadence said, handing me some pills and a glass of water.

I greedily grabbed them and swiftly ingested them.

"Think you can stand up?"

I nodded and proceeded to swing my legs over the side of the bed. My legs were wobbly, but I managed to steady myself. Victory.

"Good, now let's get some food in you."

Que my stomach rumbling. Awesome. Cadence chuckled and I felt my face light up like a flame. He led my to his kitchen where a plate of delicious looking pancakes awaited me. My mouth watered as I pushed Cadence out of the way and began devouring the delicious creation.

After I finished I turned around to meet a pair of awestruck eyes. I looked down in embarrassment, mumbling a quick apology.

"Well," he started, "I see that you like pancakes. Good to know."

I laughed nervously while getting up to put my empty plate in the sink. "Mind taking me home now? I've got some homework I need to finish."

"Uh, yeah sure."

After entering my home, I plugged my phone in. There were over ten texts from Aubry. I opened the first one.

What the hell happened? Why are you at Cadence's? Are you okay? Text me when you get this!

I sent a quick reply telling her that I was fine, and that I would see her tomorrow. It was already seven o'clock, so I started my homework and readied myself for bed.

When I pulled up to the school the next morning, there was no Cadence in sight. My spirit fell a little bit. I was so used to him walking me to class. I shook my head. Get a hold of yourself woman. You can handle one day without him. You're independent.

I lumbered my way to class and braced myself for a mundane day. Greg was eagerly awaiting my presence. I tried my hardest not to roll my eyes and took the seat next to him. I wasn't in the mood for his cheeriness.

"Gooooood morning, Eugene! You look wonderful today. How was the rest of your weekend? Did you miss me?" With each sentence his eyes became brighter and brighter with excitement.

"Hi. Thanks. Good. Sure." I replied with a monotone voice.

"Someone's sleepy today!" Greg bellowed.

"Yup."

"Hey, so I was wondering if you wanted to have lunch with me today?" he asked a bit unsure of himself.

Well, Cadence isn't here, so it's either him or no one. I prefer no one at the moment, but I should be nice.

"Sure, why not?" I replied.

Why am I incapable of saying no to this guy? Ugh! Those damn doe eyes!
