When lunch finally rolled around, I prepared myself for a long hour ahead of me. Be nice. Don't snap at him. You have no reason to resent him. Friends will do you good. You are a social butterfly. Pfft.

After my little pep talk, I went to meet up with Greg. I eventually found him sitting on a bench near the back of the school. As I approached, his smile lit up and frantically waved to me. This kid has the most energetic and friendly demeanor. I smiled and waved back.

"Hiya, Eugene!" Greg's chipper voice said, once I was in hearing distance.

"Hey there. So, what have you planned for lunch?" I questioned. My stomach was silently rumbling causing a little eagerness in my voice.

"I brought us some lunches from home! Let's see here." He rummaged into his bag and pulled out two brown paper sacks. "For you, milady." He chirped, handing me the sack. "Let's eat outside! It's beautiful out."

I smiled and nodded as he led me out the door into the courtyard. He walked straight up to the very tree that Cadence and I always eat under. Its big, broad limbs and bright green leaves never failed to shade us under the hot sun. Why this one? There were a dozen other trees he could have picked! This tree was private. For me and Cadence only, no matter how childish that sounded, that's how I felt. Whatever, it's just a tree.

"This good?" He asked plopping down into the grass.

"Yeah, it's fine." I lied.

After a while of both of us silently munching on our lunches his voiced piped up, "Are you and Cadence an item?"

Whoa- what? His sudden inquiry caught me off guard. I hesitated before answering, "Uh, no."

Relief flooded through his face. Oh god, I know where this is going. What do I do? What do I do? Why was I incapable of being a cold-hearted bitch? My thoughts were interrupted by his voice.

"So, uh I know we've only only hung out once, but I really like you," he paused and took a deep breath, "Would you like to be my girlfriend? I hope you don't think I'm rushing things, but I feel like we have a real connection."

My mind went blank.

...

...

...

...

"Uh, okay." I squeaked. What? Jesus. I am pathetic.

I looked up at him and he looked like he just won a giant stuffed puppy at the fair. Well, on the brightside, my mom will finally be happy that I got a boyfriend. Yippee. This shouldn't last long. He'll eventually get tired of me like all the other boyfriends I've had. This will last two weeks, tops. He'll realize that I'm not that great, and move on to a girl who will really like him. He is a pretty popular guy, I've seen the ladies eyeing him.

While in my deep thoughts I failed to notice Gregs head leaning in closer to mine. Ah, hell. Before I knew it, his lips collided with mine. Reluctantly, I started kissing him back. I can't shove him off, he's my boyfriend now. He was a pretty good kisser, but I didn't feel anything special. I don't even know if that "special" feeling is a real thing. Maybe it isn't?

After a while, he pulled away. His face was deep red. It was kind of cute. That was when the bell rang, signalling that lunch was over. Greg helped me up and walked me to my next class, hand in hand. He quickly pecked my cheek before walking away.

Math went by quickly and I was soon headed to my painting class with Aubry. I couldn't even sit down before Aubry spoke up.

"Word around the street is that you and Greg are dating now?"

"Yup." I simply stated.

"Yup? That's all I get? Seriously?" she jeered.

I smiled at her and nodded.

"Ugh! You are ridiculous." she grumbled. "You never told me you liked him."

"Uh huh." I stated, which turned out to sound like a question.

"Wait, you don't actually like him."

I made a sort of incoherent sound at an attempt to make her let it go. No such luck.

"Oh my god, Eugene. You need to end it. You're gonna break his little heart!" she exclaimed.

I stayed silent for awhile. "I can learn to like him. He's nice. And besides, he'll probably get bored of me eventually."

"I said it once and I will say it again. You are ridiculous, Eugene." she stated, defeated.

Once I got home I told my mom the "good" news.

"Oh! I knew you and that Cadence kid had something special!" she squealed.

"Uh, no mom," I blushed, "His name is Greg. He's the guy that dad scared half to death."

"Oh." Her excitement died down a little, "Well, that's great honey. You should have him over for dinner sometime."

"Yeah, sure." I replied.

The next morning, after getting ready, Greg was waiting for me outside in his car.

"Oh, hey Greg." I sighed. "What's up?"

"Hey, babe. I'm here to take you to school." he stated. I shuddered at the word "babe".

"Ah, alright then." I finally responded.

The car ride to school was filled with his excited chatter of some big party coming up. I didn't pay too much attention to it.

"So, do you want to go with me?"

"What?" I mumbled, finally giving him my attention.

"Do you want to go to that party on Friday?" he questioned with pleading eyes.

"Oh! Uh sure. I have nothing planned."

"Great!"

A few minutes later we pulled into the parking lot. Cadence was back, waiting for me. Oh this is awkward. Cadence finally spotted me getting out of Greg's car. His eyebrows furrowed in and I scowl formed on his perfect face. Wait, what? Did I just describe his face as perfect? I shook those thoughts out of my head. I looked between both boys and noticed they were both glaring at each other. After a while of suspense, Cadence fled the parking lot. Uh, okay then. I hope Cadence is okay. I'll talk to him in Government.

It seemed to take forever for the bell to ring to end third period. I nearly jumped out of my seat and rushed to fourth period. I spotted Cadence already in his seat, intently reading his book. I took the empty spot next to him.

"Hey, what's up? You looked upset this morning."

He didn't even look up from his book before replying a simple, "I'm fine."

"Oh, uh alright." I murmured. It was obvious he wasn't in the mood to talk. "Do you want to have lunch today?"

Again he didn't even stop looking at that damn book, "No, I'm busy. Sorry."

I sighed, defeated and slumped back in my seat.
