Chapter 6
“Well, you can’t do anything from the project today, but you and your partner can start brainstorming for the first part of your project. GO!,” Ms. Short commanded.
Instantly, there was the scarping of desks against the floor as people moved their desks toward their partners. However, Brooke just stayed there. Nick just stared at her. After about 5 minutes, she caught Mrs. Short getting ready to confront them for not working, so she decided to make conversation.
“So…, what math concept do you wanna do?” She hesitantly asked as she, too, dragged her desk towards his.
He looked at her as though she had asked him to donate both of his kidneys.
“Uhhh… I don’t know,” he replied after recovering from shock. “Why are you talking to me?” he whispered.
“I’d rather not fail this project, thank you very much,” Brooke replied calmly.
“Right,” he straightened up at that, and proceeded to answer her question. “Um, I think we should do something fairly simple, that doesn’t take too long, and is easy to understand. Like the Order of Operations, for example,”
“So you’d rather do something easy and less time consuming and get a bad grade than do something that is worthwhile and will bump our GPA’s up,” Brooke stated.
Nick just shrugged.
“Well I don’t agree. I think we should do function notation, and vertical shifts. It has graphing, and plenty of ways to make charts and diagrams,” she stated, leaning back in her chair, satisfied by the confused look on Nick’s face. “Maybe he wasn’t so smart at all,” she thought. “Probably bribed the principal into transferring to a higher class, because it looks good on a college application. Well that bit wasn’t going to work with me,”
He sighed. “Okay, that’s too difficult for children to learn,”
“That’s the idea of the project, a challenge,” Brooke replied immediately, crossing her arms.
He tried again. “Look, why don’t we do slope intercept and point slope and graphing? It has graphs and charts and diagrams, and it’s easier to learn than….all that stuff you just said,”
God, why was he so freakin’ stubborn?
Brooke scoffed. “Well, Mr. Walker, in case you haven’t noticed, this is an AP class. A-P. Advanced Placement,” Brooke said slowly. “So, we are doing what I said,”
He signed in defeat. Yessss. “Fine,”
“Good. Now, we need to write down the basic points of the---“
“Look,” he interrupted .”If we are going to do this topic, there is no way we are going to finish the project by the due date. We are going to need to work on this after school. So…you up for it?”
