Dee dragged Jasper from where he was seated, and we snuck to the back of the house where we could whisper amongst ourselves. Dee glanced at Jasper as we paced, and then back at me. Grabbing his forearm, she pulled him slightly away.
"She wants to know," Dee spoke softly, her voice low.
"About the necklace?" Jasper's eyes widened. "You can't tell her."
"What am I supposed to do?" Her voice was urgent, but I couldn't stand there and listen to them any longer. A rough feeling was crawling up the back of my neck, and my face contorted itself into a frown that I couldn't remove.
"What is it with you guys?" Irritation spread out in my chest as I stared at them.
"We're trying to figure something out." Dee was calm as she spoke.
"Yes, something about me. I have no idea why you're discussing me without including me." My face was heated, my hands curled into fists.
"Hayley, you have to understand..."
"No, you understand." A soft rumble emanated in the sky as dark clouds rolled over us like a thick grey blanket. "No one's telling me what's going on, and I'm supposed to act like I'm okay with it? Well, I'm not okay with it and somebody will tell me!"
My hands started to glow a light blue. Sparks of electricity danced in between my fingers, but I was too heated to notice. Furious, I marched away, Jasper and Deidre following from a safe distance.
"Hayle," Jas called out as I strode towards the lake. "What's going on with you? You don't normally act like this."
I ignored him, halting at the edge of the lake, my shoes barely touching the water. I forced myself to turn around, and slowly unclenched my fists. It was dark, and I was gnashing my teeth at the fact that the people that I was supposed to trust were keeping secrets. I watched them, expecting them to tell me something... anything, but they were silent. I thrust my hands up in the air from frustration, and there was a boom of thunder whose sound seemed to have traveled straight from the core of the earth.
Dee and Jas stared at each other wide-eyed. Behind me, a lightning bolt illuminated the sky, splitting it in half. The water from the lake rose to form a large wave in the shape of an arc around me. The water was pulled back into the lake, crashing in on itself, and the light in the sky fizzled away. Immediately after, it started pouring the world's source of life.
"Hayley," Dee walked up behind me and rested her hand on my shoulder. She gasped and thrust her hand away, her body convulsing.
"Dee!" I turned to catch her as she fell, but Jasper sprinted towards me, pulling her away, then dropping her as if he had received a shock. "Jasper, what's happening?"
"Hayley, don't touch her! Step away!" I did as I was told, stepping back into the icy water.
Jasper flung open his backpack, searching vigorously for his cell phone. He grabbed it hastily and dialled, before shoving it back into his bag. He moved Dee so that she lay flat on the grainy sand. Not a moment later, my mom sprinted out of the woods and towards us.
"How is she? Was the shock that bad?" She looked at me, her eyes full of worry. "Hayley, how are you feeling?"
"I... I'm fine. Wait a minute, you're asking me--"
"No time to explain. Jasper, move Deirdre over to the lake." I shifted from foot to foot, kneeling beside Dee as he placed her down next to me. "Hayley," my mom stared at me, demanding my complete attention. "I want you to take her hand and concentrate. Focus all your energy--"
