Nova was proving to be a very difficult colt to train. " Nova settle down" I tell the large black eyed bay as I grab the halter that is older then him and possibly myself. Surrender etched in brass catches my eye. " hey Lilac who was Surrender?" I ask my cousin's friend. " Breeders cup juvenile fillies, Kentucky oaks, two time breeders cup distaff and four time Eclipse winner that foaled a Belmont winner and BD before dieing. Alexandra" Lilac tells me. " sounds like a great mare" I tell her as I try again with the saddle. Once more Nova rears up. " he does not like that saddle" Lilac comments. " any ideas" I ask as I step back. " he seems to spook whenever something passes him on his left side and his dam comes from a family known for eye problems." Lilac tells me. " so you think he has vision problems" I ask her. " he might" Lilac tells me. " here I'll saddle him you hold him." Lilac tells me. " he's a kicker" I warn as I move to the colt 's head. " he's a biter" Lilac tells me in response but I get the last laugh when Nova tries to kick Lilac. Nova he has alot of weird things about him. We had to give up on shoeing him since the farrier threatened to sue if Nova give him another black eye, if I want to clean his hoofs I have to start with his right back leg then go to his left foreleg, you have to lead him from the left side. " got it" Lilac comments as she steps back just as a half ton monster explodes. " what did you do to him Lilac?" I ask as Nova refuses to be calmed down. "I got the saddle on and the girth tighten before he could react" Lilac tells me. " I'm pretty sure we're trying not to terrorize Nova." I tell her. " he'll get over it look he's already calming down" Lilac tells me as Anna comes out to see what the racket was. " was Bloodless Day that bad?" I ask as I walk the large colt in a circle. " much worse he sent people to the hospital" Lilac tells me. " Nova's nearly sent some to the morgue or whatever the place they take bodies to is called" I tell her. " fair point Nova can be worse" Lilac tells me. The large, wobbly milky brown colt with the white sock that Nova once was is like saying a Shetland pony is a thoroughbred. Nova his coat is now a sleek dark brown that glows gold in the sun and is practically flawless and is light and confidence on his feet. " I think you two terrorized him enough Shamrock still needs some work" Anna tells us. I quickly unsaddle the colt and put the saddle on the fence before walking him back into the stable. Final Shamrock is a smaller but more pleasant to work with chestnut filly with four socks and a shamrock shaped star on her forehead. " morning Shamrock" I tell the filly as I put her halter on her and I notice the same thing as with Nova's the halter says Dancer's Lucky Shamrock instead of Final Shamrock. On my way out of the stall leading the filly I notice the same name on the nameplate. " Lilac who was Dancer's Lucky Shamrock?" I ask as we saddle the filly. " when your cousin Anna first came her she was put in charge of a three year old named Dancer's Lucky Shamrock. Dancer's Lucky Shamrock wasn't the fastest or the bravest but she tried the most. Unfortunately she broke down in a race and had to be euthanized. Final Shamrock is her full sister and they are exactly alike no matter how you look at it" Lilac tells me. Shamrock takes the saddle and bridle well and before long Lilac has put me on the juvenile filly. "Sure this is a good idea?" I ask her. " Alexandra you're the best Western rider I know and if you can handle a colt first thing in the morning on the track you can handle Shamrock" Lilac tells me. For a late birthday present Anna manged to talk my parents into letting me have a four year old Apploosa mare and I was promised I could have a foal from the next group from the Piperson ' s within reason.
