I was strumming a few chords on my guitar, humming some lyrics. It was a calm afternoon in winter. I was sprawled out on my bedroom floor, writing notes and lyrics. The doorbell of my apartment rang ceremoniously. I didn't want to get up and get the door, though no one usually came around my apartment. I slid the bourbon bottle underneath my bed. I lumbered through my apartment, not fully sober.
When I opened the doorway, Lux stood there holding up a bag of take-out. She gave me a big grin and walked right into my apartment without saying a word. Her burnt orange sundress swished around her and her black platforms hit the floorboards of my apartment with a nice rhythm.
"Hey, umm, what are you doing here?" I ask scratching the back of my neck.
"Eating at your house" Lux said matter-of-factly. She started to empty the contents of the bag on my island table. The smell of the food wafted up to my nose and my stomach grumbled.
"See you're hungry" she remarks.
"Yeah, I guess I am" I mumble. I didn't remember eating anything today either. Lux dished out our food and we started eating.
"So vat ver you doing fore I came?" She said with a mouthful of sashimi in her mouth.
"Writing some songs" I answer.
"Oo, can I hear them" she asks excitedly. Her mega-watt smile was in play and I couldn't say no to that.
"Sure" I say. She followed with a cup of soba noodles drenched in soy sauce. She leaned against my door frame as I started to strum.
"All my friends they get drunk
All my friends they get high
All the girls I know get wasted
Takin' vacations with boys with blunts
between their forefinger and thumb"
I sang.
"I've gotten a little crazy
Haven't seen the world through those rose tinted sunglasses in a while
Fingers dipped in that drug pile
Narcotic, psychotic, hypnotic"
I sung adding runs and high notes.
"Yeah that's all I have right now" I say, ending it abruptly. It was depressing to say the least.
"It veels vwike your wvipping my vart out " she says through a mouth filled with soba noodles.
"So good?" I say with a laugh.
"Very" she affirms swallowing her food.
I look down again at the papers that littered my floor. When I look up Lux is walking towards me carrying a lightweight laptop into my room with her soba noodles still in one hand. She climbs onto my bed and pops open her laptop.
"Hold this please" she says sincerely holding out her soba noodles. I take them from her and watch as she puts her hair into her signature two buns. She takes the soba noodles and begins to eat and type.
I gaze beneath my bed, hoping that she doesn't find the bottle. I go back to working on that song. Usually having people around me while I worked bothered me, but having Lux there made it better.
We didn't talk for a few hours, so it was just the clacking of keys and the strumming of my guitar. The sun was dipping into the horizon and I'd accumulated a decent amount of lyrics and notes. I slid out the bottle from under my bed and stood up. Lux was curled up her head snuggled into my pillow. I placed the bottle on my dresser and then moved Lux's laptop onto my nightstand.
