My alarm awakes me from my peaceful slumber.
"Man In The Mirror" by Michael Jackson was the song I had chosen to awaken me each morning.
I am starting with a brand new school today. I had left my old school just before the summer because I couldn't take it there anymore. It was so overwhelming for me, the amount of work, people always on my back.
"Do this, do that." it always sounded like. Constant, manic streams of horrible mainstream high school.A decision was made with teachers, and my parents, that mainstream school was too hard on me. It was decided that I should move to a small school.
And by small, I mean small.
One teacher to either 1, 2 or 3 students at a time, with only 30 minute long classes. No homework, calling teachers by their first names, it's also free to go to this school. My old school was a mere five minute drive from my home in the countryside. My new school, a 30 minute public bus ride to the heart of the city.
I do my normal morning routine. I dress in a jeans and t-shirt, and I yank a hoodie over my head.
As I walk into the kitchen, I am greeted by my foster mother.
"Good Morning, Julie. Are you happy about starting your new school? Would you like something to eat?"
I nod.
"I'm very excited, Helen. I can't wait to see what it is really like there. And I don't want to eat anything, just a cup of coffee is okay."
Helen fixes me a cup of coffee just the way I like it, and even though I have been living in this foster home for nine years, I still call her by her first name. I have intentions on moving back to my parents house once I turn 18. It's now September. I'm 16 until October 2nd.Then just one year to go.
I finish my cup of coffee and pick up my empty school bag. Another perk of my new school is that we don't need to buy any school books, or pens and paper. It's all there when you get to school.
"Are you ready to go?" Helen asks, smiling.
"Yes," I smile back at her. "I'm ready."
