Galen's POV:
A letter from Father was never a pleasant sight. The words he wrote were often condemning things, hellbent on breaking my resolve and dragging me back under his thumb. He claimed that if only I came back home, my fall from grace could be forgotten--to which I answered with silence. A letter from Father meant I had crossed his mind; every fault was reviewed, every action was critiqued, every decision was undermined. It sat there on the counter, his dark scrawl marring the pure white of the envelope, sealed with red wax and stamped with a skull.
My phone suddenly rang, breaking me from the dark hold the letter had suddenly put on me. Looking down at the screen I saw a picture of brunette with big gold eyes and a ridiculous smile (the kind that call for sticking out one's tongue). I quickly answered the call, however before I could even manage a hello Vanessa was talking.
"Oh my god, Galen can you believe this?! Father has finally gone insane! I can't believe this, I'm absolutely livid! Positively fuming! What the hell does he think he's doing, besides setting a big ass fucking target on our heads! I just--I am--ugggg," I rolled my eyes as her voice surged through the phone.
"Good morning to you too," I chuckled.
She let out a sputtering sound, completely put out that I wasn't as riled as she happened to be, "It isn't one. Have you even opened Father's letter?" I hesitated and looked back at the offending piece of paper that sat waiting on the table. "Galen," Vanessa groaned, "ignoring it won't make it go away. It also happens to have some pretty important information in it this time. I mean once you get past the whole 'You are a disappointment to the Blackwood family, insolent child return to the lineage that you were born to' stuff."
"Why open mine when you can just tell me what your's said," I answered in a haughty voice that I knew drove my younger sister up the wall. "Besides, Father likes you better. That means you're letter is nicer than mine."
"I doubt it," Vanessa huffed. I could basically hear her rolling her golden eyes. It was a well known fact in our family though that out of his five children, Father liked me least. "I mean, Mother told me Vicky been in the--"
"Vanessa, just tell me what Father said," I interrupted.
She gave another huff, but when she started talking all the tease had dropped from her voice, "He's invited the Wolve Gang to the Gala. He said he want to work out a sort of treaty with them. That wouldn't be anything too bad, except for the fact that the Wolve Gang doesn't have a clear heir right now."
I quickly interjected, "What do you mean no heir?"
"The leader of the Wolves was murdered a coupled months back by a traitor. One of his two kids was supposed to marry a high up in the gang and then take over, however, the traitor killed the kid. Now the leadership falls between the fiancé and the other kid," Vanessa explained. "The problem for us, is that the kid is the woman who married Rayden. Meaning that when she and the fiancé go to the Gala that the Reds are going to be there as well. Father is basically inviting an army to Mother's party and he believes that no will leave without bullet holes. Which is absolutely ridiculous!"
With a groan I pinched the bridge of my nose. Slowly I walked over to the envelope and picked it up in my hands. No doubt it said something similar to Vanessa's, as our letters always did, but I knew Father had undoubtedly added some kind of threat to mine. "I don't want to open this," I mused into the phone as I tapped the letter against the table.
"I don't want to do a lot of things that I do, so get over it, you twit," she sassed. I rolled my eyes, knowing as I did that she knew I was. "I have to go take care of Knox now, so I'll talk to you later. Oh, Galen, one more thing before I say bye...you looked absolutely adorable in that picture this morning!" With that my lovely little sister hung up the phone and left me completely confused and holding my Father's letter.
A moment later I finally sat down to open the letter. The words on the paper were similar to what Vanessa had described; Father's ultimate plan to ally himself with the notorious Wolve gang and his desire to spread the reach of the Grim Gang. The letter demanded my attendance to the Gala, upon my mother's request of course, followed by a pleasant string of 'You are a disappointment to the Blackwood family, insolent child return to the lineage that you were born to' stuff...as expected. It was the last lines of the letter though that caught my attention and made my heart nearly stop.
Galen, among other things I have been notified that you have welcomed a new member to that pitiful excuse of a gang you lead. I was also informed that this mere girl has become a target of the Red's fascination. Bring her to the Gala. If you don't I'll have one of the men see to it that she is present, whether she wants to attend or not. Don't attempt to evade my command, as I know you may think to. She is a new player in this game between us Kings, and I intend to use her to my advantage. If she isn't present at the event, I will kill your pathetic friend Walker Song. Do not disappoint me.
It was signed with a simple "Father" and that was that. I stared down at the words before me, completely shocked. I buried my face in my hands, feeling the sudden hopelessness that always came with Father's presence. He expected me to bring Rose to a party filled with more firearms than guests, and threatened to murder one of my best friends if I didn't obey. I knew there was a good reason I didn't like to open letters....
