Knox's POV:
I laid my head against the rough wall behind me and struggled to think through the pain that was splintering through my chest. Thick darkness, from a moonless night, filled my tiny cell and threatened to drown me. It filled my eyes, crushed my bloodied body, and isolated me from the world.
My thoughts, as halting as they were, revolved around Phoenix's threat. She was after Rose, intent on desecrating her fragile existence and using her pain to force me into submission.
I coughed roughly and felt the stabbing pain of my recently acquired knife wound, given after I lost all my self control and jumped Phoenix. The feeling of crashing my knuckles into her nose rushed back to me and I failed to have any regret. She deserved it.
However, the guards hadn't quite agreed...
As I remembered my brutal reward to punching the Red's fiery heir the door to my cell opened and a tall figure stepped in. "So it's true," scoffed a tragically familiar voice, "Knox Endler has returned to the Red Castle at last."
The person squatted to be eye level with me and I found myself looking into the turquoise eyes of Rayden Davis. With a sarcastic chuckle I replied, "Not by choice of course."
Rayden grinned deviously, "I heard Phoenix had managed to get her hands on you. Naturally Pops is furious, because of you a whole lot of Reds are having to walk on eggshells around the old man."
I coughed again, "You can tell that old prick--"
"That you love him and send your best wishes," Rayden interrupted happily. My glare only made him snicker. "You haven't changed a bit, Knox. I thought for sure if we ever met again you'd be after my throat, but you just hold a relatively civil conversation just like old times."
"I'm secretly planning your murder," I assured him as I attempted to sit up straighter against the wall.
"Yeah, I'm sure. Anyways I came down here to tell you Phoenix is on her way down here," he replied as he gently ruffled my wild curls. As if summonsed by her name Phoenix appeared wearing a sneer.
"Rayden, I see your affection for Knox hasn't changed," she huffed. I narrowed my eyes, an old anger threatening to rear its ugly head, but Rayden's beat me to it.
"I see your's hasn't either," he growled. Instantly Phoenix's cheeks flushed a light pink. Rayden smirked, having dealt his blow, and looked to me with an old spark in his eyes.
"Listen, Ray, I don't have time for you. I've got a present waiting for Knox and I feel as though he's quite anxious to see it," Phoenix snarled. I felt my skin blanch. She had her.
Rayden noticed my silent terror and stared at Phoenix with confusion. "Did you bring Peony back," he hissed. Phoenix's icy eyes flashed dangerously and she answered her brother in a low voice, "No, but I've got someone better. Someone our dear Endlers are both fond of. Now leave, before I remind Pops about you're latest scandal."
Rayden let out a bark of laughter, "Well good luck with that. He's blinking mad right now, said you are in some deep shit Nixie, so I think I stick around for a bit. Thanks."
I looked at Rayden with raised brows, if it had been another time I might have inquired about his scandal. Rayden winked at me before he looked at Phoenix patiently waiting for her retort. She simply huffed angrily before grabbing ahold of my arm and yanking me to my feet; a terrible cry of pain tore through my throat as I felt every gash I'd been given was brutally ripped open. Without a hint of hesitation Phoenix shoved me from the small cell and began dragging me roughly down towards the torture room where I'd been earlier. Rayden followed behind, whistling quietly and kicking the back of Phoenix's shoe. The three of us carried on that way until we reached the large black door. The sight of the door sent dread into the pit of my stomach--Rose was behind it after all--and the moment we stepped through it her torture would begin.
I attempted to slow Phoenix's approach, but the walk had taken my strength and she simply yanked me roughly. "You can always stop this, Knox, just tell me what I want to know," Phoenix whispered in my ear.
I shook my head, not trusting my words, and instantly guilt washed over me.
Without another moments hesitation Phoenix threw the door opened. Rose's voice cut through the sound of the doors slamming against the dank wall, through Rayden's gasp of surprise, through my thundering heartbeat.
"Knox!"
