Adam woke up that morning to his stepmother packing her suitcase. She was humming and stuffing all the clothes she'd brought with her back into the ratty bag that looked like it was dying to pop a seam.

"Oh, good, you're up," Mindy hefted his backpack, still packed, onto the bed. "Get packed, I have to get the plane back."

"We're leaving?" Adam pushed himself up on his elbows, trying to be awake faster.

"I am leaving, you are staying," Mindy pointed to him. "Your father is gonna fax the paperwork over so those managers of yours will have some kind of custody. It's all complicated. I don't know," she realized a second later he wasn't moving. "Get up!"

"Sorry," Adam scrambled out from under the covers, tugging his shirt down to hide the fact he desperately had to use the bathroom. He grabbed the cleanest clothes he had out of his bag and went to the bathroom to change.

"I am just amazed, Adam, I tell you," Mindy talked the whole time he was in the bathroom but he couldn't hear her clearly until he opened the door. "I have to be honest, I wasn't sure I was ready to be a stepmother to anyone but the Lord has worked this for our good, He really has."

"Oh," Adam washed his hands, tucking his pajamas under his arm. He'd always suspected Mindy didn't like him but now he knew. For some reason it hurt anyway.

"I know that's not kind, I do, I just didn't know with the girls being so little and you coming from whatever that lifestyle was your mother was living," she didn't notice his reaction at all. "I should have trusted all along. You know God's ways are just so mysterious sometimes, they are, and I am..." she trailed off. "What's the matter?"

"I'm just listening," Adam shrugged. He crossed the room and put his pajamas in his bag.

"Oh my word, I didn't even think about this," Mindy stopped what she was doing to stare at him. "I know you're probably not happy about having to live with some gays. But I really think there's a higher purpose here."

"Actually, I don't care," Adam knew from her reaction that he shouldn't have said it. Mindy was speechless for almost a full minute.

"See, He's at it again," she broke into her plastic smile. "You are just a better person than me, Adam, you are. I should try to be more loving. Hate the sin, not the sinner, right?"

"Mhm," Adam fought to keep his mind from wandering but it took off anyway. How could Monroe and Jeff be evil sinners if they were going to let him move in? It wasn't like they knew him. For all they knew, he could be crazier than Mindy.

Fortunately, Mindy didn't get into it like his dad would have and, once Adam wrestled the zipper on Mindy's suitcase shut, they ate their free breakfast and got in the rental car so Mindy could drop Adam off before she left.

"Oh my gosh, this cannot be the right street," Mindy shook her head as they wound their way through one of the prettiest neighborhoods Adam had ever seen.

"Maybe the map isn't updated," Adam tried resetting the gps app but it still said they were going the right direction.

"These houses just keep getting bigger," Mindy pulled her sunglasses down. "Oh my goodness, I bet that car cost more than our house."

"It probably did," Adam felt sick all over again. He looked down at his backpack. There was no way he'd ever belong in a neighborhood like that. Everyone would know he was nothing, a nobody.

"What was the number again?" Mindy asked.

"4," Adam looked at the map on his phone. "It's that driveway."
