Adam was trying to decide if he wanted to roll a joint one afternoon when he got a text from Brent asking him to come over right away. Brent didn't say what was wrong, but it sounded urgent.
"Where are you going?" Cole looked away from the TV when Adam grabbed his car keys.
"Brent's."
"Adam, please stop looking at me like that."
"You promised, Cole," Adam reminded him. Cole sighed and turned back to his TV show.
That was how almost every one of their conversations went after Cole told his mom they would adopt Lucas's baby. Adam didn't want to believe that after everything they'd been through, Cole hadn't stopped to talk to Adam about the enormous decision. As if adopting a baby was just some little thing.
Eli texted Adam as he was walking out the front door that Brent and Maddox had discovered FreeBrent.com. Adam's heart dropped. Brent had to be crushed - the whole site was pretty much devoted to bashing Maddox and talking about how awful he was for Brent. For some reason, most Complexx fans seemed to think Brent was secretly miserable. He wasn't sure how Dax would take it but it couldn't be good.
Adam got to Brent's house as fast as he could. Eli was already there, of course, and he and Maddox were in the kitchen when Adam let himself into the house.
"Brent?" Eli was asking.
"He took it really hard," Maddox nodded. "I never dreamed it would hurt him like this, but he's just destroyed."
"Our fans are everything to him," Adam kept his voice low. "You know he tries so hard to be perfect for them and give them everything he can."
"But they did this because they love him," Eli frowned. "They're scared of losing him now that he's married and having babies. That's all this is. They want to be what makes him happy, not Dax and Hannah."
"This is a really fucked up way to show it," Maddox looked way better than Adam expected, maybe a little tired. "They want me to die, Eli. Have you seen the shit they write on there?"
"Yeah, I have an account," Eli sighed and took his phone out. "Don't get mad, but there are members only sections too so I signed up so I could see what they were saying. I had to know in case we had a chance to sue."
"Oh my god," Maddox shook his head.
"I want to see," Adam looked over Eli's shoulder at his phone. "I've only seen the public side. They're not wrong about everything, you know."
"That's what makes it so bad," Eli agreed. "They totally predicted that Jimmy would cancel his wedding."
"What?" Maddox gasped.
"You haven't heard?" Adam thought everyone knew. "Jimmy got caught cheating. He's literally been cheating on Elsie from the beginning. They only got engaged because she wanted to, he never planned to marry her."
"I knew I hated him," Maddox shook his head.
"Anyway," Eli let Adam take his phone so he could scroll through the forum. "I'm really sorry, Dax, I should never have said anything."
"And what? Just let it go on?" Brent demanded. Adam looked up and saw Brent looking furious. He'd moved past the hurt stage and onto anger. "I can't believe you didn't say something sooner, Eli, isn't that your job?"
"If I told you every time someone said something stupid about you on the internet we'd all be dead before I finished talking," Eli told him. "No one knew this one website would go viral like this."
"Are there other sites out there like this?"
"Nothing like this," Eli shook his head. "I mean, people say the same shit on tumblr and twitter all the time but there's not really whole websites like this one. Not for you."
