Adeline laughs, curling back her lips to take a bite of the hot pizza without burning her mouth. She only bites the tip of the pizza, making me chuckle.
"What?" She giggles," it's hot!"
"So are you."
Adeline rolls her eyes and decides to ignore me. She takes another bite of her Hawaiian pizza. It's a topping I'll never understand. The only topping that should ever be on pizza is pepperoni. When we were ordering we had a disagreement on this. She said pepperoni was gross and I almost. I like pepperoni on my pizza like Andy likes ranch on his carrots. Sure, pizza is great without pepperoni but it's so much better with the delicious topping.
"You and your stupid pepperoni toppings have fun," Adeline says in disgust. "Ive got to pee. I'll be back."
Once Adeline leaves I eye her pizza. I've never tried Hawaiian before...
"Screw it," I mumble, grabbing the piece and taking a bite. As I chew, I start to feel dizzy. The world seems to glow with a new light and my mouth is exploding with a flavor that is both familiar and majestic. Adeline jumps in front on me and grins.
"I knew it!" She cheers," I knew you would like it if you tried it."
I quickly take a drink of my soda and feign disgust," no! What? This is horrible!"
I will not let her know she was right. I would never hear the end of it! Adeline purses her lips in doubt, but doesn't try to get the truth out of me. Instead she sits back down and takes her pizza away from me.
"You know I think I need another bite of this monstrosity of a pizza," I decide, taking the pizza back. Adeline laughs and takes another piece from her half of the pizza and drops it on my plate.
-------------
"That was fun," Adeline smiles up at me, leaning against her front door."I agree," I say, taking another step towards her," you didn't fall too hard did you?"
She shakes her head," no I'm fine. It was actually kind of easy once I got the hang of it."
I nod in agreement, tucking her hair behind her ear. Adeline pulls me down for a kiss. Just as I cup her face The light above the porch flickers and I look into the kitchen window to see her father glaring a me. I take a step back respectfully and smile at Mr. Campbell. He scowls at me and points to my truck.
"I think that's my cue to leave," I laugh. Adeline springs forward and pulls me down for a kiss before I leave. I kiss her back, but stop almost immediately so I don't get killed by Mr. Campbell. He flickers the light one more time so I kiss Adeline's forehead before I go.
"I'll see you later," I say before walking to my truck.
"I love you!" Adeline calls.
"I love you too," I say back, starting my truck.
Once I get on the road my phone rings. Without looking down I answer it and put it up to my ear.
"When are you getting to the home, garçon?" My mother wasn't the person I expected to get a call from. She's not supposed to be home until tomorrow and she never calls me from work.
"Soon," I answer," why?"
"There is some, man person here in a suit of ties here to speak with you," mom says, trying her best to explain the man. I can't help but chuckle at her English.
"What's his name?" I ask her.
There are muffled voices before she speaks again," David of Antonio."
"No David Antonio. There is no of," I hear a male voice say in the background.
"I am sorry David Antonio with no of. I can be bad with names sometimes," mom says to the man. He sighs.
"David Antonio?" I ask," Texas recruiter David Antonio?"
,
"Oui, yes! That one!" My mother says excitedly, happy she knew what I was talking about.I turn into our road and say goodbye to my mother. Soon enough I'm at my front door. I take a deep breath before entering.
I'm greeted by my mother almost immediately. She speaks to me in a hushed voice.
"Why do no one tell me this man has the looks that are good?" Mom asks. I laugh and squeeze past her. David smiles at me politely, shaking my hand.
"What an...," he pauses," interesting mother you have here."
I nod, chuckling," that's the nicest thing someone has ever said about her."
David nods, glancing at mom. From the expression on his face I can tell he believed my statement.
"Let's cut to the chase kid," he says," your father and I talked and we've agreed that your grades are only going to decline with time. So the day after Christmas we're bringing you to Texas."
Shock is the first thing I feel; but anger followed instantly.
"Was anybody going to tell me this?" I ask," since it is my education we're talking about."
David sighs," kid, your father is one of our school's sponsors. It's the only reason why we aren't bringing you now. He says you need some time to say goodbye to your friends and family. But, you and I both know this school is the best for you and your future."
I can't help but roll my eyes. Of course my dad is behind this. He always is.
"I don't have to go if I don't want to, remember," I point at his chest," your school and your football team are the ones who want me, not the other way around. Remember that."
David sighs, putting a hand on my shoulder," I'll see you in a month, kid."
"Yeah, I guess you will."
