The hoot of the distant owl could be heard from Devi's perch near the window for the house was still silent. It was more than ten minutes since Vel had entered the room, that's what perplexed Devi as to how the house was still silent. Just then the door opened, and all head turned in that direction not knowing what to expect.
Jasmine exited the room, a bright smile illuminating her plump face. She beckoned Shanti to come where she stood near the door. From the vantage point of where they stood, through the crack of the door, Shanti and Jasmine had a sight to behold.
Vel and Valli were seated on the couch near the window overlooking the garden and hills beyond. His uninjured left hand hugged her close, her head tucked under his chin, tears of joy glistening his eyes, a smile trying to curl up his lips. Vel and Valli were in a deep yet relaxed discussion, about what couldn't be heard, but enough to know that she felt comfortable and at ease with him.
For Vel, this was life's greatest moment. For wanting to stay away he felt like a fool. Sometimes not taking things in hand becomes the greatest hindrant to the successful completion or even the beginning of the said task.
By now the entire group, after witnessing Shanti's smile and tears of Joy, had assembled near the door all wanting to know what was going on. To accommodate all the door was opened further and silence grew into murmurs. And that tensed Valli once again but Vel was quick in comforting her, but not before shooting them a stern look,
"Ain't I with you? Don't worry! "
With that Valli relaxed. And Valli's father again herded out rest of the party. But the doctor sneaked in. A relatively relaxed Valli was given her medicines after checking her vitals. Soon she went back to sleep. Vel stayed with her for some more time and then left the room to talk to her family.Back in the living room all were eager to know how this was happening, but only the siblings showed it openly. For them this was nothing short of a medical miracle. Probably Valli recognised him as her ally for his was the only face she saw constantly before, during and after the head injury. His voice was the one that she heard constantly before and during her coma. She recognised only him.
Now was the time for some answers and so freight train Devi began with her questions. Vel raised his hand halting her midway, enraging her in the process how dare he.
"You get to ask only if you listen fully. If you interrupt then you get no more answers from me. And one question at a time, please. "
For the first time in so many days her mother laughed and just like that Vel was forgiven.
"How did you know her? I mean, how did you know that her name was Valli and this is her father. And his phone number?"
"Well, I didn't know her name first so decided to call her Shri. She looked familiar but I couldn't place her. So I let my mind wander, thinking I may get some answers. But my mind kept gong back to the previous day's commotion near the Badminton Court at the Gymkhana. Probably my answers were hidden there"
"Dad's phone number? "
"Hmm! I may have had a long chat with the watchman and may have sneaked into the office on some pretext."
"Oh" said Devi trying to digest the information.
"How did you meet her in the first place? "
"Destiny" pat came Vel's reply, for that was the only explanation Vel had as to how he reached the woods at the appropriate time. He couldn't remember his walk to the woods. For both Vel and Valli this was a new birth, a chance to begin life anew.
He then turned to her father and
"I know this is too brash of me to ask but I can't refrain now. Can I keep her with me. I will take care of her. I assure you that my intentions are entirely honourable"
Mr.Sambhasivam looked at his wife who only nodded an affirmation. He then replied "Welcome to the family, Son"******The End******
