CHAPTER TWELVE.
ONE HOUR EARLIER.
There was no mirror in her room. It felt safer that way.
Kathrine took a deep breath, and switched off her light. She breathed a sigh of relief. The streetlamp illuminated her room.
Ever since she was almost pulled into the mirror, Kat had been too afraid to turn off her light before sleeping. However, the light was too bright, and prevented her from sleeping. She had probably gotten about five hours of sleep in the past three nights alone.
Luckily, Tanya had agreed to sleep with Kat. She felt like she was five years old again, asking someone to sleep in the same bed as her. Kat didn't care, though. She felt safer with Tanya.
Tanya had already closed her eyes. Kat lay on the bed beside her.
'Goodnight,' she said.
'Night night. Sleep tight,' Tanya yawned lazily.
Five minutes later they were both asleep.
*
Kat woke up, but kept her eyes closed.
She heard a sound. Something was walking around in her room, it's feet scraping against the carpet. It's pace was slow and it sounded like it was dragging it's feet.
'Tanya?' Kat whimpered, hoping it was her who was walking around.
She slowly opened her eyes. She saw Tanya's form lying beside her on the bed, sound asleep. The scuffling of feet still sounded beside her.
Kathrine became cold instantly. She could hear her heart thumping in her chest.
I'm just imagining it, she tried to convince herself. I'm sure there's nothing behind me. It didn't work.
Just turn around, she urged herself. There'll be nothing there...
She wasn't taking that chance!
'Tanya!' she whispered loudly. Kat grabbed Tanya's shoulder and shook her violently.
'Huh? Wha'?' Tanya stirred.
Suddenly, an invisible force pulled the covers off the girls. Kat screamed, Tanya's entire body tensed.
'Kat,' Tanya whispered frantically. 'I-I can't move.'
'What?' Kat asked in horror. She turned her face to Tanya. Tanya looked like a statue on the bed.
Kat heard an animalistic growl behind her. Suddenly, Tanya was violently flung off the bed. She screamed. Something unseen dragged her out of the room as the door slammed shut.
***
As soon as she had been pulled out of the room, she felt a coldness leave her. Warmth began to seep into her.
Tanya gasped as she regained control of her limbs.
And then she realized. The Demon had just wanted her out of the room. It was after Kathrine. Tanya jumped up and started banging on the door.
'Kat! Run!' she screamed.
***
Where could she run to? Kat sat on the bed, paralyzed by fear. The street lamp sparked and shut off, leaving her in complete darkness. Kat could see nothing.
And then she remembered the light switch. It was beside the door. Maybe the light would make the Demon go away.
Kat jumped off the bed, landing a few feet away from it. She started running to the light switch. Something grabbed onto her feet making her crash down.
'Get off me!' she screamed.
Although she couldn't see, she brought her foot back and kicked whatever it was in the face. She heard a growl as the thing let go of her foot.
Kat didn't bother getting up. She crawled like an animal on the floor. Finally, her hand made contact with the switch and bright light illuminated her room.
Kat jumped up and spun around. It was gone.
Max crashed into the room. Tanya, Max, Aunt Lisa and her husband, Larry, all piled into the room. Kat collapsed into someone's arms.
*
'Ugh! She isn't answering her phone,' Tanya grumbled as she paced back and forth around the room.
Kat was huddled in an armchair, a snug blanket wrapped around her. Aunt Lisa and Larry were sitting on the couch beside Max. They had all decided this was getting out of hand. Tanya decided to call Suzanne and tell her everything, but Suzanne hadn't been answering.
Suddenly, Tanya stopped pacing. Her features became worried.
'What's if it's taken her?' Tanya asked, in barely a whisper.
'She's probably just at a party,' Max suggested.
Suddenly, they heard a loud thud upstairs.
'I'll check it out,' Max stood up.
'I'll come with you. It's too dangerous,' Tanya said.
Max picked up an umbrella that was by the front door.
'Do you really think that can defeat a Demon?' Aunt Lisa asked worriedly.
'Kat said she kicked it. This can help,' Max said.
He and Tanya cautiously started walking up the stairs.
'Wait, maybe we should all leave the house,' Aunt Lisa said.
'It could probably be a raccoon,' Max replied.
'Yeah, it's probably--'
Tanya's sentence was cut as all the lights in the house flickered out. The house plunged into complete darkness.
'Someone messed with the main circuit upstairs,' Max whispered.
Tanya froze in shock when she heard the bloodcurdling scream.
Suddenly, the lights flickered back on.
'Is everyone okay?' Larry asked.
'No,' Tanya said, her body going cold at the sight.
Kat was lying motionless on the floor. Her eyes were closed and her skin was pale.
