TRIGGER WARNING

--

"Are you okay now?" the woman asked sitting beside me in another room as I held the warm cup of tea in my hands that they'd given me to call me but I didn't care.

I didn't say anything.

"I could say I'm sorry, but that doesn't generally help does it?"

Nothing.

She breathed heavily and pursed her lips, "I should explain who I am."

I didn't care.

"My names Patricia. Your mother is my best friend, she has been since we were younger than you. The last time I saw her in person was your fifth birthday, and she made me promise that if anything happened to her and your father I'd take you in."

Nothing.

"I'd hoped the next time I saw her it wouldn't be like this. I never thought anyone like her could just disappear."

I cringed, but said nothing.

"I made a promise though and I'm so glad I did, I wouldn't have wanted you to just be handed off to some stranger who didn't even know your parents."

She was a stranger. I said nothing.

"Did you want to go see them one last time or are you ready to go?" she'd given up on trying to connect right not. I just stood and walked in the opposite direction of where their bodies were. There was not reason to got o their capsules they weren't actually there anymore. I aloud her to show me to her car and she went back to my house so I could pack my stuff. The house was almost as dead as them. Everything looked to be the same as usual, but it just wasn't anymore. I didn't mind leaving. On the way back out the door with my final bag I saw a peice of paper on the counter in the kitchen. I went over and picked it up reading:

'Y/N,

Sorry we didn't wake you, but we went to get you a little surprise for tomorrow. Be back in a few hours.

Love,

Mom and Dad'

I squeezed my eyes shut. Tomorrow. My birthday. Because I needed a stupid material possession all because another year has passed.

'Y/N, are you ready?" Patricia asked walking in. I folded the note carefully and stuck it in my bag walking out to the car without a word.

* * *

During the drive she'd talked some, and tried desperately to get some reaction out of me, but I just stared strait ahead. Not looking at anything, just staring. Again she gave up for now and turned on the radio.

Of course the first song to play was my mothers favorite.

I bit my lip hard and closed my eyes seeing her and dad dancing around to this song every time it was on, or her singing along no matter how many times she heard it, it never got old to her.

Again time passed quickly and quietly, and we were in front of what I assume is her house.

"Come on, I'll show you your room, we can bring up your stuff later. I'l get my son and his friends to help."

Son? I said nothing.

I followed her into the house and upstairs at the far end of the hallway was a white door with a golden knob. She left me there and I watched after her until she was out of sight and opened the door slowly.

It was a reasonably sized room with a large window and a full sized bed in the corner. I could tell it was probably a storage or guest room due to half the room being covered in boxes, but I didn't care.

I went over to the bed and laid across it, and just cried. Not a sobbing cry like I've been, but a silent painful cry that makes your throat catch fire and your eyes squeeze shut.
