Why me?

      Astrid's P.O.V

I quietly sat in the back of my handler's hover. We were heading to my new foster home, my new hell house. Though I haven't said a word, my handler glared at me from the mirror. "What are you plotting back there, Astrid?" She spat my name out like it burnt her. I didn't bother to reply. I was used to by now. All the Earthen treated me like this. Even the other Lunars.

I rubbed the lower part of my spine, feeling a bump under my skin. The minute Princess Selene found out I was related to Levana, she had one of those anti-bioelectricty manipulation devices placed in me. Just to make sure I don't try to remove it, they placed it somewhere fatal. I think they were planning to kill me during the operation. I don't mind the device though. I was never planning to use my gift, and the device helped me from going insane.

The scenery outside rolled by fast, as if even the world wanted me gone. Even as I traveled to many different foster homes, it was always in the same country. New Beijing. I cursed silently as that word traveled through my thoughts. They want to keep a close eye on me. So, I'm stuck here. By they, I mean Emperor Kai And Queen Selene. As long as they think I'm a threat, I'll never taste freedom.

"Get out of my hover. I just cleaned it, and you already soiled it." My handler snapped, yanking the car door open. I never remembered her name. Besides, she pulls harder on that door and she won't need me to soil it. I didn't realize I said it out loud, till a hot searing pain burnt my cheek. I gasped, as I clutched my now red cheek. Did she just slap me? I don't think that's legal. Not like anyone would care.

"That will teach you to respect your elders. News flash! You're not on Luna anymore, Princess." She sneered, walking away. Blinking back tears, I realized we stopped in front of a large house. I moved out of the hover, a plastic bag in hand. It was filled with the only things I had left. Anything precious I once had possession of, was either being studied by the government or stolen by previous foster parents. The only things in the bag was a few pieces of clothing, an overused makeup compact, and my journal.

Writing in my journal's the only time I feel safe. They say it was from my mother. That's why they confiscated it, before returning it to me. It's cover's a magnificent royal blue, decorated with mini silver moons and stars. It's the most expensive thing I own.

As we approached the house, it grew in size. The brick walls were covered in vines, and the border was stark white. From where I was, I could see a pool and the woods. So basically, my foster parent was rich. Probably from me. They must've offered her a lot of money. Why else would she take me in?

My handler knocked on the big wood door, and after awhile it opened. A thin stern looking woman appeared, mouth set on a thin line. Her blonde hair was pinned back into a perfect bun, her green eyes stormy. "You must be Christina and... Astrid." She said, reluctantly saying my name. Yup, I knew it. She doesn't want me here.  Also, I guess my handler's name is Christina.... Yeah I'm gonna forget again.

With a sharp nod, my handler started whispering to her. I only caught phrases, but that was enough.

           "She's sneaky. Be careful."

"No spoiled lunar brat is going to shake me. She can't even use her gift."

That stung. I chose not to use my gift in the first place. Also, I don't remember anything from my lunar days. I was only 3 months old when they found me. 3 months. I'm practically Earthen.

I was brought back from my thoughts, as they stared at me. "Astrid, Mrs.Winnefred asked you a question." Christina snared. Hey, I remembered! "I'm sorry. Could you please repeat?" I asked, looking at the ground. The cement was cracked, and speckled with sand.

"I said, What school are you in? Do you need hearing aids?" Mrs.Winniefred smirked, crossing her arms. Biting my lower lip, I looked up. "I go to Beijing High, ma'am." I quietly replied. Rolling her eyes, she turned to my handler. "DCF obviously paid right? There's no way she got in for her brains." She said, obnoxiously loud. Shrugging her shoulders, my handler walked away. Before climbing into her hover though, she said two last words. "Good luck." Then, she sped off. And I mean, sped off.

With that, only me and Mrs.Winniefred were left. "Well stop acting stupid and get inside." She snapped, sashaying inside. I scrambled to follow after her. As she walked, she spoke. Not like I listened. I was too busy being hypnotized by her massive house. The walls were made of pure white marble, laced with fake gold. Above my head, a golden chandelier hung and two staircases led to the same floor. Which was pointless, unless she had guest come over alot and they all have to use the bathroom at the same time. Then they could race each other up the red carpeted stairs. Which then would make those stairs, pointless and  stupid.

"Are you listening?!" Mrs.Winniefred shouted, startling me. Her hands were place angrily on her hips, and her lips were back at a thin line. I thought about lying, then changed my mind. Don't want to give her a reason to hate me even more. So, I shook my head.

With a groan, she pinched the bridge of her nose. "Fine. Only because I have sympathy on retarded people, will I repeat once more. In my house, don't speak without permission. Don't go outside without permission. I don't want to have to look at you, so stay in you room unless I say otherwise. You'll only get three meals a day, and absolutely no in between snacks. Don't need you to get fatter than you already are. Last but not least, no dating. I won't allow some poor boy to be ropped in by your trickery. That's all. Hanna will show you to your room. I'm already exhausted from looking at you." She sighed, dramatically placing a hand on her forehead. Great, I'm living with a British diva jail keeper.

A thin girl in a pink dress came over to me. She looked around five, and terrified. Of me. With shaking footsteps, she led me down a corridor. After a few minutes, she led me into a room. "This is your room. If you need anything, keep it to yourself. Bye!" She squeaked leaving, after saying that speech that Mrs.Winniefred probably made her learn. With a shrug, I looked around my room.

It was miniature compared to the other rooms, but huge compared to what I use to have. The walls were plain white. So was the floor. And the small bed. And everything. Also, broken mirrors covered every surface of the room. Now I knew why the girl was scared. I would've have probably peed my pants, if I had to lead a lunar into a room full of mirrors. Broken ones, nevertheless.

With a forced sigh, I sank into the bed, and curled into a ball. That night I cried myself to sleep, disoriented glass demons watching over me.

Freezing cold water and chunks of ice, joined me in the bed. My eyes flew open, only to see the smirking face of Mrs.Winniefred. "Wake up, you lazy useless nothing! It's time for school!" She smiled cruelly, before leaving. I inwardly groaned, and I left my soaked bed. Why me?

And.... that's a wrap of chapter one! How it's it so far? Tell me the truth! I'm a big girl, I can handle it! Also, how many of you can relate to the school thing? I can!
