Chapter 10

After making my way out of the burned room, I found myself in an abandoned city in Wonderland. Everything was green. The floors, the buildings, even the animals! Alas, time has won out the green colouring and now, the green has turned into a somewhat dark brown. Scurrying like a mouse, I made my way to the grand entrance of the city. After the horrifying meeting with the siblings and their death, I can't trust anyone. I needed to find Constance and get home. She should be with the Hatter.

Nearing the entrance, a sign had arrested my attention. I brushed off the layers of dust, revealing a few faded words and a distinct clover pattern.

' Queer Green City. Bow down to our Queen.'

So this is Queer Green City. Ugly place.

I took a final look at the green city. It stemmed so grand and elegant, but now seemed buried in a forgotten forest, hidden behind a mist. I could remember some tales Ann used to tell me about a forgotten city. The people prospered, many citizens came to trade, it was known far and wide, until their Queen did something horrid. They burned her to the stake. And from then on, the city died. They say if you walk on the ground of the city, your walking on the citizens flesh and bones.

I turned around and followed the faded yellow brick road, this could lead me to the Hatter, I hope.

Through the thick foliage of a long forgotten forest, I smelt the familiar smell of pepper stew. I came across a small kitchen, with yellow and blue tiles. They had a disgusting later of muck and grease on it, not to mention, it was hammered onto a forest floor by only a box of rusty nails.

"AH ALICE!" A hearty voice laughed.

The familiar figure of a plum woman walked towards me in an unsteady manner. Parts of her overflowing belly jiggled at every step.

" Cook! Ah it's good to see you again!" I shouted blithely as skipped towards her. Finally someone who've I've met before.

"Here have some stew! Here's one for Ann." Cook said merrily as she scrutinized the surroundings in search for Ann.

"Cook, Ann is not with me. I came her alone, now the Hatter has my sister." I said solemly.

The cook froze , dropping the bowl of pepper stew. She squinted her eyes at me and demanded,

"Alice, you cannot just simply enter Wonderland at anytime you want! Especially without an escort!"

I shivered at her harsh words. Cook never raised her voice at me, this must be a serious issue.

"I'm sorry... But I just want to find Constance and leave! That blasted Dodo brought me to that abandoned city!" I retaliated.

Cook frowned at me, she gripped my hands and whispered softly,

"Abandoned city? Is it the Queer Green City? What did you see?"

I gulped down the spit that was lodged in my throat and nodded.

"To see.... To see the.... Siblings." I murmured.

Cook let out a sharp gasp and grabbed my hand. She tore open a tile from the ground an shoved me inside.

"Do NOT move. Wait here." Cook demanded.

I sat in a freshly dug hole as cook placed the tile over my head again. I waited in silence until the sound of horse hooves and rumbling wheels was heard. A splashing noise echoed next.

" Cook, my dear, have you seen Alice?" A rough voice asked.

"No sir!" Cook said firmly. I could sense the bitterness in her voice.

The stranger laughed mockingly before leaning down to the tile I'm below. He pressed his ear against it. I could hear his hot breath against the tile. I stopped breathing, pressing my body against the mud filled lining of the hole.
