Chapter 3
I shuddered. Suddenly, the carriage stopped and Henry rushed out frantically. I looked at Ann quizzically, only to meet a mocking smirk plastered on her pale face.
"Alice, dear, want to go to Wonderland again?" Ann smiled effervescently at me.
I quickly agreed, arm in arm, we skipped merrily towards the large eerie mansion, which my step-mother owns. Do not be fooled, although you may be mislead by the fairytales of evil step-mothers, Miranda is actually quite decent. The sound of my black heels tapping against the smooth marble floor responded through the grand ballroom. At the corners of the ballroom, were two long spiral staircases that led to the second story of the mansion. We skipped towards the one situated on the right.
"Alice, love, could you come here for a minute?" The clear voice of Miranda echoed.
My smile fell. So much for going to Wonderland. Ann gave me an assuring nod and sat down on one of the seats.
"Miranda? Where are you?" I called out.
" Your father and I are in the drawing room!" Miranda replied.
In a quick pace, I walked to the drawing room, to find Father, Miranda, and my elder sister Constance. Upon seeing me, Constance gave a loud snort and rolled her ugly brown eyes. Miranda gave me her best smile and gestured at the empty seat.
"Now, I have gathered you all today to announce some big news. Miranda and I are getting married!" My father announced triumphantly.
Constance and I was shocked. We had always thought Miranda was a playtoy for father, not an object of love intrest. You see, my father was a young man of 35 he had met my mother at their secondary school. Soon, my mother became pregnant with Constance and then myself. She was seventeen. Right after my birth, she died. After her death, father never learned to love again. There were women, but there were just to satisfy sexual pleasure. So to us, it would seem rather absurd that Father would want to marry Miranda.
"NO! Father you CAN NEVER marry her!" Constance screeched as she stood up. She stabbed her finger Miranda accusingly.
Miranda was at the verge of crying. Being rejected by the girl she had tried countless of times to please, is a terrible affair. Father was clearly fuming mad with Constance. He rased his large palm and slapped her right on her cheek. I let out a small gasp. Father never hit us.
"YOU GOT MUM KNOCKED UP. THEN YOU LEFT HER. NOW YOU RUN FOR THIS THING. I HATE YOU!" Constance shouted as she ran out of the room. Her head was tilted so that Father would not notice her tears.
"Constance!" I shouted.
Father has changed.
