Six

The school day came and went in it’s usual flurry of boredom mixed in with a lot of socializing and before I knew it I was collecting my things from my locker to start my journey homewards.  I closed the door to reveal a year twelve guy standing there leaning casually against the lockers.  I nearly jumped backwards at the sudden shock of the sight of him.  I had no idea how long he had been standing there.  He smiled wide at me.

“So, Saturday night, you me and the movies.  How bout it?”  His words came out in a casual drawl.

“Thanks but no thanks,” I said in a mutter and hurried away from him.  Once I was safely away from the lockers I risked a look back over my shoulder to see him still standing by the lockers.  My first suspicions had been right.  I had never seen that guy before in my life.  I put my head down and bolted for the bus.

Michelle was sitting in our usual seat waiting for me.  I stumbled in next to her and pushed my bag under the seat in front of us.  She cocked her head on the side.

“You ok?  You’re all red and flustered.”

I looked back at her and rolled my eyes.

“Boys!  They never change do they?”

“Did someone hurt you?”

I laughed and settled back in the seat.  I felt safe here on the bus beside my friend.

“Nope,” I said.  “But a year twelve guy just asked me out!”

Michelle’s eyes flashed and a wicked smile crossed her lips.

“Was he a looker?”

“I didn’t wait long enough to find out.”

“Wish someone would ask me out,” she said with a pout.

“Hey you can have locker boy, he’s all yours.  Besides don’t rush into love, we have are whole lives to find prince charming, so why settle for less?”

She looked at me sideways.

“You sound like my mum, are you sure your ok?”

I made a show of getting comfortable to give me time to gather my thoughts.  I was fine, I knew that.  But I also knew without a doubt that the heat of romance fades and if there was no love to back it up then you had nothing.  I looked back at her and smiled.

“Locker boy just shook me up a bit that’s all, let’s talk about something else.”

Michelle looked out the window away from me.

“I just wish boys would chase me like they chase you.”  She looked back at me and grinned.  “So you coming to my play on Saturday night?”

“Yep, dad got us tickets.  I’m really looking forward to it.”
