Fifteen.
I sat in the waiting area of Morcomb, Slocomb and Long waiting for Ebert to come out. I was holding the box containing the partner ring clutched in both my fists in front of me. I would have been crying, except I had no more tears to give. The Ebert came and ushered me into his office without saying a word. I waited until he had closed the door and seated himself behind his desk before speaking. I placed the box containing the ring on his desk.
“What do you want me to do with that?” his voice was flat, calm and expressionless.
“Keep it. I don’t want it.”
“I heard what happened Jessica and I am truly sorry. But it has happened before. Do you remember?”
I looked up at him with dead, emotionless eyes. Yes I remembered. Not everyone could handle the memories. That’s why you had to be so careful who you chose as your partner. So this didn’t happen. I looked down at the ring on my finger.
“Yes, I remember,” I said flatly. “But I don’t want too.”
I slid the ring off my right finger and placed it beside the box containing the partner ring.
“Remembering losing him for one lifetime is going to be hard enough.”
He stood and gripped me by the hand.
“Do your realise what you are saying? Once the chain is broken it can never be repaired.”
I locked eyes with him and he let go of my hand.
“All things must end Ebert. It will be nice just living once don’t you think?”
With that I turned and walked from his office, the memoires of past lives already starting to fade……
The End?
