Nine

I stashed the partner ring in my jewellery box and lived the next week like my head was in the clouds.  And I suppose for a lot of the time it was.  Old memories came more and more often, making school work so easy it almost became boring.  I knew so many things that I had to be careful just how much of my old knowledge I shared.  Friday finally arrived and I was clearing out my locker for the weekend when someone approached.  I saw their shadow this time so I was ready when I closed the door.  What I wasn’t expecting was Mathew’s smiling face.

“Hello Jess, I finally have you alone.”

I smirked at him.

“Really?  I didn’t know you had been trying.”

“All week.”  I could read the honesty in his eyes.  “But your friends seem to stick to you like glue.”

“It’s good to have friends.”

“Look.”  He glanced about making sure we were alone.  “I wanted to ask you out on Saturday to the movies.  But just you and me.”

“What no chaperone?”  My voice was smug.  He frowned.

“Who has chaperones these days?”

I giggled.

“No one sadly, at least not officially.”  I looked sideways at him.  “Can I trust you alone in the dark?”

He swallowed.

“Of course.”  He tilted his head sideways.  “I’m a good boy.”

“Pity, I was hoping for a bit of bad boy.”

His grin nearly split his face.

“Saturday night?”

“Hmm.  Movie choice?”

“Does it matter?”

“To me.  Yes.”

He looked kinda startled, then he thought for a moment.

“How bout that new Sandra Bullock movie?”

“A chick flick?  You must be keen.”

“Please say yes.”

“Yes.  Call me with the time you want to go.  You buy the tickets, I’ll buy the popcorn.”

“Deal.”

“Well, I gotta run.  My bus is leaving.  Call me.”

I turned and walked away leaving him standing by the lockers.  An odd thrill ran through me.  Dating didn’t get any easier now matter how many times you did it.
