HEY! Long time no see!
johnsonNormally, I love answering the door. It typically means that a package has arrived, but occasionally it's one of my grandmother's friends. They always bring desserts.
However, sometimes it's no good at all. Like when the boy on the other end yanked me outside, gripping my wrist as he took off in a dead sprint.
"Ahh!" I screamed, barely able to keep up. "Stop!"
The boy halted suddenly and released my wrist, letting me fall to my knees. My head was spinning, and I let myself use my forearms on the pavement to stay up.
"Wh-what's going on?" I panted, rolling over to lay on my back. Despite being skinny, I was still out of shape and it was embarrassing how much it showed. This guy hadn't even broken a sweat.
"Oh, come on," he said, standing above me. "Look how far we've gone. How can you be so out of breath?" I followed his outstretched arm to where he was pointing. Yeah, we were less than a block away from my house.
"Some people aren't track stars," I mumbled, getting to my knees.
"Are you good?" he said, sighing. "Can we go?"
"Go where? Who are you?" I said desperately.
"Are you kiddi-I swear to God. I knew Cameron didn't-"
"Hey!" I said, pushing his arm. The tan boy paused, looking at me questioningly. "Just tell me what's going on."
"We have no time. The Obscurbris is closing in at ESPS. Get on my back; we have to go."
"Wha-"
I was cut off by arms flipping me and setting me over his shoulder like I was nothing more than a towel. Then boom, the world was zooming by. He was running at vampire-like speed and it felt like we were moving through a time channel.
What the shit was going on? Not even ten minutes ago I was sitting at my kitchen counter, sipping on orange juice. My grandmother was supposed to be inviting a few friends over for bridge and whatever they do, so that's who I was expecting when I opened the door. Not this taller, darker teenager with a prominent jawline, unlike my own, that decided to whisk me away.
The tunnel of blurry images started to fade away as the boy slowed down. He put me down for a moment, letting me look around.
There was snow on the ground. Snow. I had never seen a single snowflake in person before, much less huge drifts of it against trees and weighing down boughs.
"Holy," I muttered, balling some up in my hand. My palms and calves were slowing freezing, but I took no notice. This was incredible. It had never ever snowed where my grandmother lived, or, well, where I lived.
"I'm hallucinating," I concluded, dropping the snowball. Of course I was. There was no logical reason as to how I went from harsh sunbeams and suffocating humidity to mountains of freezing snow in less than twenty minutes. It was impossible. Somehow, I'd fallen off of that bar stool and knocked my head into unconsciousness.
"No, you're-"
A great dark shadow came from nowhere, materializing to midnight black sand. It barely missed me, making a whoosh sound as it moved. However, the other guy wasn't so lucky, and the sheet of darkness sent him flying backwards and into a tree.
