"Happy Birthday!" My best friend shouted.
"Can you believe it? You made it to sixteen! I have a big night planned starting now." Ester dragged me to the front door of our orphanage.
"Ester, I don't know, I 'm not feeling too good." I hadn't been all day.
"Trust me Jessica you'll be fine." She smiled encouragingly and opened the door. The moment the full moon hit my face I squealed in pain. It felt like my skin was being ripped a part, like every inch of me was on fire. I heard Ester cry out in pain, but there was nothing I could do. After a excruciating couple of minutes, everything was suddenly clear. Too clear. I could see further into the distance than I could before, I could hear things I never could before like the sounds of the ants marching beneath my feet- or paws? I looked to Ester and she was covered in blood with claw marks on her arms. I tried to ask her what happened but all that came out was a growl. She looked at me terrified.
"Wolf!"She screamed and ran back to the house.I woke up with my hair stuck to my face, safe in my room. I hated dreaming of my past, I couldn't stand being could Jessica anymore, now I go by Calyn. Two years ago to the day, that was me. my first shift the most painful thing I've ever done. Now I've got it under control and am training in the Avengers building. I head out to the track running in wolf form always helps me to clear my head after a bad dream. I run and run feeling the wind all through my auburn fur, my ocean green eyes wide with anticipation. After about half an hour I feel calm enough to accept the things that have happened.
"Morning Calyn." My ears turn towards the familiar voice of my savior.
"I'd run with you but I don't think I could keep up." Agent Grant Ward patted my head and I looked at him willing him to try.
"No, I'm not going to try, not today I've done my morning workout." He smiled.
"Hey Ward! Wolf Girl! Whats up?" Agent Antoine Triplett shouted out. I growled at him cursing him in my head as my wolf can not form words.
"Calyn! None of that language." Ward scolded. It was strange, he was the only one who seemed to be able to understand what my wolf was trying to communicate.
"I still have no idea how that even works." Trip patted my head and Ward passed me a bag. We sort of had a routine. Unfortunately not all wolf things were good, like the fact that you don't get to keep the clothes you are wearing on yourself when you shift back to human form. I took the bag in my mouth and went to shift back. I put on my usual black clothes and boots pulled my hair out of a pony tail and walked back to the boys.
"So, what's for breakfast?" I asked."Have you got any plans for today?" Trip asked as we sat down at our usual table in the cafeteria.
"Only the usual." I said, my usual being train, train and train.
"You have to have a break sometime, Even the T-1000 over here has a break sometimes." Trip patted Ward on the back and I laughed, then started choking on my food.
"Take it easy Caly, We can't have you dieing right, the new recruits for the avengers are being announced today." Ward said. I managed to stop choking.
"This is my favorite time."I exclaimed.
"Yes, cause we get to watch another two recruits fail to meet Avenger standards." Ward and Trip said at the same time rolling their eyes. I guess they heard my say it the least couple of times. Over the years I had become really close to these to guys. They had accepted my for who I was, not many people at this facility had, a lot of them didn't trust me because and I quote 'I'm less human then the rest of them.'"Attention all Trainees!" Phil Coulson's voice rings through out the cafeteria and silence followed.
"Following recent events last weeks recruits have resigned from the Initiative. Today I will announce the next two lucky and fully deserving recruits. Despite their young these two recruits have time and time again proved their worth and perseverance. Could I please have Agent Grant Ward and Agent Jessicalyn Jackson sent to the debriefing room." I froze. I couldn't move. How did they know what my name is? I never told anyone, not after Ester. Ward stood up proud and left for the Debriefing room. I heard the whispers 'Who is Jessicalyn?'
"Do you know who Jessicalyn is? You seemed to freak out." Trip asked me. I shook my head. I couldn't believe it."Agent Jackson to the debriefing room. Now!" This time Coulson looked directly at me. I stood up shaking, this was not happening. Trip grabbed my hand.
"It's okay, chin up, you got this." He smiled and I squeezed his hand before letting go and heading to the debriefing room.As I walked in the room Ward's eyes lit up.
"What are you doing here, Caly? Miss me already?"
"I-"Nick Fury interrupted me.
"Agent Jessicalyn Jackson, Agent Grant Ward you have half and hour before the quinjet leaves for the Stark tower. Be in the loading bay." Fury leaves and Ward is left stunned looking at me. I look down not wanting to risk seeing anger in his eyes.
"So, JJ, is actually you? All the things you have with intials JJ, aren't in memory of your friend, it's you." He sounded hurt.
"I buried that name with Ester along time ago." I felt tears in my eyes, I hated thinking about that night. She didn't make it and I knew it was my fault. Ward lifted up my chin.
"I still wished you told me, It's a beautiful name." I blushed.
"I couldn't risk being called that name, it brings back to many bad memories." I blinked back tears as Ward moved a displaced hair behind my ear.
"That's why I'm here, chin up. I'll see you at the loading bay." Ward left me with my thoughts.
