Chapter 13

“Where?” Rebecca asked and Gabrielle looked up. Rebecca did the same and she saw two ghost-like people descending from the room. When they finally came down, they were smiling at Gabrielle and Rebecca. “I’m Brigitte.” Said the fair woman with the long braided hair. “And I’m Brigitta.” The other one with the curly hair said. “We’re honored to be with you girls.” They both said. “Uh, isnt it supposed to be the other way round?” Rebecca asked and they all laughed. Brigitte floated round the room admiring it while Brigitta simply looked at all of them. “So…” Brigitte floated back. “Why were we called from the land beyond?” She asked the two girls. “Well, we have a little bit of an issue and we were hoping you could help us with it.” Rebecca answered. “Hmm, I hope you two arent fighting over the same guy, huh?” Brigitta said. “What?” “No!” Rebecca and Gabrielle said together and Brigitta shrugged. “It happens a lot.” She said and Natasha laughed. “We just wanted you to help us. We captured a member of the Order of Doom.” Gabrielle said and the two ghosts made similar sounds. “And we were wondering if you could tell us how we could follow her to her next meeting without putting ourselves in danger.” She completed. Brigitte and Brigitta looked at each other and they sighed. “You do know you’re dealing with a Tristid.” Brigitte said and she dropped her voice on the last word. They nodded. “And Tristids have very, very keen senses. They would be able to know at once what you’re planning.” Brigitta said. “So there’s no way?” Rebecca asked dejectedly. “I’m afraid so.” Brigitta proclaimed. “Unless…” The two ghosts said. “Unless what?” Gabrielle asked. “How far are you two willing to go for this task?” Brigitta asked and the girls looked at each other. “Any length.” They answered. “Any?” The ghosts asked. “Yes.” Rebecca answered confidently. “Then we can help you.” Brigitte said. “Yes!” Natasha said. “But it requires a sacrifice and for the sacrifice; one of you witches is going to need to take a human life.” Brigitta said. Rebecca just stared at the ghosts. “I’m sorry, what? We have to take a human life?” She asked. “No, no, no, no.” Gabrielle said. “We cant do that! That’s a crime against nature to us witches.” “That’s the only way.” The ghosts said gravely. Gabrielle shook her head. “Oh come on! You guys cant just take one life? Just one lousy life?” Tyler said and Gabrielle looked angrily at him. “Well if it’s so unimportant, why don’t we take your life?” She asked irritably. “Guys, focus.” Chris said. But then Natasha jerked her head up suddenly. “Chris, do you feel what I’m feeling?” She asked and he looked confused. After a while, he nodded. “The coach is up. I’ll go take care of her.” He said and sped away. “What do you guys think?” Gabrielle asked the ghosts. “We cant possibly say anything. We’re no longer living.” Brigitta said. “But you’re doing this particular bad for a particular greater good.” Brigitte said wisely. “You may be punished or you may not be, depending on the seriousness of the issue. Just think wisely. Is it really worth it?” The ghosts ended. “Guys, we need to think about this. Can we call on you another day?” Rebecca asked them. “Oh any day’s fine.” Brigitta replied. “Oh, except for Thursdays and Saturdays.” They smiled and floated up to the ceiling where they disappeared into thin air. Rebecca exhaled. “Let’s not talk about this now. Maybe tomorrow.” She finally said when she saw Sebastian’s worried face. He nodded and Tweenie shrugged at her. Natasha fully understood why her sister was finding this task mainly difficult. She could sense her sister’s conflicting thoughts in her mind. And when their eyes met, Natasha gave her a reassuring smile though she herself was less than assured. Slowly the crownd in the room dispersed and she went up to the loft. It was her favorite place to think. She sat on one of the steel chairs and just stayed there. Tweenie went quietly to the loft where she was. “Cant anyone get enough privacy these days?” Natasha said without looking at her. She had smelt her before she had seen her but she didn’t attempt to leave the place. “Sorry Tasha, it’s just, I have an idea.” Tweenie said and sat down beside her without invitation from Natasha. “An Idea for what?” She asked without interest. “For the witches’ task.” “Why are you telling me? Im not the witch.” She said dryly. “Yes, but, I feel it would be better if Rebecca hears it from you instead.” Tweenie stated. When Natasha made no reply, she went on. “You visit the hospital.” Tweenie said simply. “And what are we going to be doing there? Sight-seeing?” Natasha asked sarcastically. Tweenie exhaled. “At the hospital, we’re bound to find at least one person, who has no hope of surviving. So we’re just gonna ease their burden giving them a peaceful death.” She raised an eyebrow at Natasha. “It sounds okay but it’s not really practical. I mean, who are we to the person to just go and take their body. What if the relatives come looking for it? We have enough on our plate already, we don’t need to get arrested too.” Tweenie tilted her head. “Well, I wasn’t thinking about it like that. I was actually-” “Ah, just cut the crap already.” Someone interrupted from the door of the loft. “I overheard the two of you from the floor below.” Chris said walking around the tastly furnished room. “Pardon me, but as she said, it’s quite impractical.” Chris said, smirking at Tweenie. She folded her arms. “Oh and you have another suggestion?” “Not just another suggestion; a better one.” He gloated and Tweenie rolled her eyes. “You see, the witches said, ‘take a human life’. They didn’t necessarily say ‘end the person’s life.’ He said craftily. “Chris, what’re you up to?” Natasha asked suspiciously. “My plan is…turn a human to a vampire. That way, we end the human’s life and we give him or her an eternal vampire’s life in return.” He spread out his hands as if saying, ‘Am I not a heck of a genius?’. “That’s good but…what if he or she doesn’t want a vampire life?” Natasha asked seeing a loophole. “Who doesn’t want one?” Chris sneered and Tweenie resisted punching him. “Well, we make the person feel as if he’s a target and needs to defend himself. And once you and I teach him the basics, he’s gonna be grateful to us.” Natasha thought about the idea and looked at Tweenie. “What do you think?” “Oh, my opinion doesn’t matter at all.” She said and walked out angrily. “What’s her deal?” Chris asked watching her. “She’s feeling…unappreciated.” Tasha sighed. “Chris, I admit, your idea is really good but…” “But what?” “It’s up to Rebecca.” She said finally.
