Chapter 8

“Rebecca?” Natasha woke Rebecca up around ten am on Saturday. “I’m going to the club.” She said. “Huh?” Rebecca sat up and rubbed her huge, bleary eyes. “I’m on my way to the vampire club. I’ll be back tomorrow night.” She turned to leave. “And tell Chris not to bother. I wont be going to Vampiria.” She said with a devious smile and strolled away from the room. And sure enough, she was already gone. Rebecca got out from bed and walked to the mirror where she stood looking at herself. Her long, thick golden blonde hair was rough and pointed awkwardly in different directions. Her massive blue eyes were unfocused and she had dark circles underneath them. What a way to start the Saturday. Rebecca took a pink rubber band and tied her hair into a bun; which was a difficult task considering the weight and texture of her hair. She yawned and went out of her room. She couldn’t quite remember what Natasha had said but it had something to do with the vampire club. As Rebecca was walking, she noticed that Gabrielle’s door wasn’t closed well so she peeped into it. But Gabrielle wasn’t there. Instead, she saw a young guy with short curly black hair and olive green eyes, sitting on the bed. He was wearing a pink nightgown which Rebecca had seen Gabrielle wearing the previous night. Rebecca just stared at him and then shut her mouth. “I’m-I’m so sorry. I was looking for Gabrielle.” Rebecca looked around the bright room, but the guy kept on smiling at her. Rebecca frowned. How the heck did he get there? “Do you know where I can find her?” She asked the boy uncertainly but he just kept on smiling like he was mocking her. Rebecca frowned and turned to leave. But then the boy spoke, “Rebecca wait.” And she was surprised to hear a delicate, female voice from his mouth. She looked at him but then something was happening to him. His curly black hair was growing longer and was changing to golden brown. His olive green eyes were getting to a light golden shade. His lips were light scarlet and his masculine body was turning to a feminine one. Rebecca blinked and saw Gabrielle sitting on the bed, grinning at her. “Full body glamour, Rebecca. We’ll be covering that today.” Gabrielle smiled at her. “Were you…the guy?” Rebecca asked and Gabrielle nodded. Rebecca finally got it; Gabrielle hadnt gone anywhere, she had just glamoured herself.

“Can you do any glamour yourself?” Gabrielle asked Rebecca. In a haste to learn something, Rebecca had immediately gone to the bathroom to take a shower and brush her teeth. She put on some clean clothes and then brushed her thick blonde hair. She finally met Gabrielle outside the house, just beside the garden. “Uh…just body parts. Not full-body glamour.” She replied. “Lemme see it.” Gabrielle said and Rebecca nodded. Glamour was easy for her to do. She just concentrated on a part of her body and then had an image she wanted, and then the part of the body would turn into the image in mind. She then concentrated on her blond hair and decided on the color: black. Her blond hair turned to jet-black and Gabrielle looked impressed. “Nice.”She said. “Now, full-body glamour isnt that difficult.Though it takes more concentration and willpower.” She said and closed her eyes. Rebecca did the same. “Leave your mind blank and concentrate. Just imagine a person; a full person not just parts. Start with the head.” Rebecca inhaled and made her head empty. All she could think of was blackness in her mind. Then she imagined a pale head with shiny red hair in a ponytail, black cat-eyes, and a full rosy lip. “Then the neck would connect to the chest.” Gabrielle’s voice echoed in Rebecca’s head and she almost lost concentration. The pale head was still in her mind and then she imagined the neck and an average chest. “Then the hands, lower body and the legs.” Rebecca pictured a hand with red manicured nails and then legs with the same manicured nails. She envisioned the lower body as average. “Then, some clothes. You don’t want to appeared naked.” Gabrielle said gently. Rebecca finally visualized a red t-shirt and blue shorts. “When you’re done, you can let out your breath.” Gabrielle said and Rebecca exhaled. When she opened her eyes, she didn’t see Gabrielle. Instead, she saw a dazzling woman with long black hair and deep blue eyes in front of her. “Mom?” She whispered. “No.” The woman said flatly. “It’s me Gabrielle.” She added gently. “Oh.”Rebecca said disappointedly. “Not bad.” Gabrielle said, commenting on Rebecca’s appearance. “Lovely eyes. You did everything rightly except for the clothes. But it’s okay for the first trial.” Gabrielle smiled at her. “Thanks.” Rebecca murmured and shuffled her feet. She felt stupid for thinking her mom was actually there. And she also felt uncomfortable thinking that her mom was there, but she was not really there. Gabrielle noticed that something was bothering Rebecca. “Do you want me to change back?” Gabrielle offered and Rebecca shrugged. “How do we turn back?” “Easier than turning into. Just imagine yourself. It should be easy since you know how you look like on a daily basis. The same procedure.” Rebecca took a deep breath and then imagined her look: long, thick, blond hair. Large, adorable, sky blue eyes. Rosy pink lips and cheeks and golden brown skin. When she was through, she exhaled and then felt back to normal. Gabrielle was also back to normal. “We can do this again tomorrow. It would be easier when done consistently. And then you can learn how to do it with your eyes wide open.” She said. “Where’s your sister?” Rebecca looked confused for a moment. “Oh! She went out. To a vampire club.” Gabrielle raised an eyebrow and she didn’t really look like a fairy; She looked like a bitchy goddess. “Do your parents know about it?” Rebecca shook her head. “Promise you wont tell?” She pleaded. Even though she wasn’t down with the idea, she didn’t want to put Natasha in trouble cos her parents, especially her father, would not take it lightly with her. Gabrielle looked at her pleading face and sighed. “Fine. I promise.” Rebecca smiled gladly. “Thanks.”Gabrielle nodded and from afar, she saw a black bird with blazing red eyes watching them intently. Rebecca followed her gaze and gasped when she saw the bird. Gabrielle made some hand signals towards the bird but it didn’t move. “What’re you doing?” Rebecca asked, her eyes still on the strange bird. “Summoning it.” Gabrielle replied smoothly. After a few seconds, she gave up. “That’s no ordinary bird. It’s a demon.” Gabrielle said, her voice shaky a bit. Rebecca stared at the demon-bird which looked strangely odd. After a while, the demon-bird flew away. “We better get you inside.” Gabrielle said and grabbed Rebbecca’s hand. After they were safely inside, Rebecca looked at her. “What do you mean by that bird was a demon?” She asked immediately. Gabrielle sighed.”I know it must be strange to you-” Gabrielle began but Rebecca interjected. “No it’s not. I know of two demons.” She said and Gabrielle raised a perfect eyebrow at her. “I mean, they’re my friends.” She said quickly. “A demon can never be a true friend to you.” Gabrielle said softly and Rebecca looked confused. “I’m not saying that most of them are evil. I’ve met a few decent ones myself. I’m just saying that they cant be trusted.” “I trust Sebastian.” Rebecca said without thinking. “Well I’m not sure about Tweenie. I mean, maybe its because I’m jealous of her.” Rebecca went on, talking more to herself than to Gabrielle. “Well, he says that they’re best friends so I still don’t know why I’m a bit jealous. I think – ” “Rebecca?” Gabrielle said. “Are you okay? You’ve been kind of talking to yourself.” Rebecca looked blankly. “Let’s go to my room and talk about this. I’ll answer any question you want.” Gabrielle led her through the steps and when they got t her room, Rebecca froze. It was unrecognizable. In short, it was astonishingly differnet. There were shades of pink, dark red, purple, violet and even a bit of black. On one wall were different animals: butterflies, cats, rabbits, birds. They were all moving. On another wall, there were different flowers: lilies, roses, sunflowers and other beautiful plants. Then on the celing were colors mixed together like a rainbow. It was only the wooden floor that remained the same: light brown. The whole room was like a living, breathing creature. Rebecca was so overwhelmed. It was like she had stepped into an entirely different planet. “I can see you like it.” Gabrielle said and Rebecca looked at her. Her wavy golden brown hair was fluttering softly and her golden eyes sparkled. Gabrielle grinned. “Like it?” Rebecca managed to say. “It’s heavenly. How did you do that?” Rebecca asked. “Was Mom around again?” Gabrielle shook her head. “Powerful witches have been able to change their surroundings themselves. But for some other witches, their surroundings changed according to their mood.” Gabrielle explained. “Now, let’s talk about this demon stuff.” She said and gestured to the queen-sized bed. From across the room, Rebecca saw a beautiful, cunning-looking cat watching her. Rebecca waved at it like it was an actual person and the cat scurried off. Though, Rebecca thought she saw it smile before it went. Rebecca hopped on the bed and it was surprisingly sturdy. “So.” Gabrielle said. “So what?” Rebecca answered still studying the room. “You wanted answers about demons.” Rebecca immediately remembered why they’d come there in the first place. “Yes,” She said slowly. “How do you know them?” She asked. Gabrielle tilted her head and pulled it into a ponytail and Rebecca was reminded of the cheerleaders back at school. “Well, not many people know of their existence. I happen to be among the few who know about them.” She pasued. “Well? What do you think about them?” Rebecca inquired. Gabrielle thought. “I think that they’re treacherous creatures.” “They’re not!” Rebecca said fiercely and some of the animals on the walls looked frightened. Gabrielle remained calm and this infuriated Rebecca. “If you’d take your time to know them, you’ll – ” “I know them. Actually more than you do.” Gabrielle cut in. “Well, maybe they’re not all the same but the few ones I know are deceitful.” “Well, then, you need to meet Sebastian.” Rebecca said. Gabrielle half-smiled. “Is he your boyfriend?” She asked, eager for some gossip. Rebecca flushed. “Sort of.” She admitted. “But he’s such a nice guy and he told me everything about shadow demons and their world.” Gabrielle looked impressed and Rebecca decided to take advantage. “He and his best friend, Tweenie, are also going to join in fighting the Order of Doom.” Gabrielle’s light golden eyes broadened. “His brother and Tweenie’s sister were captured by the Order and they swore they would revenge.” “Wow.” Gabrielle breathed. “He sounds like a good demon. I’d like to meet him.” Rebecca shrugged. She’d like Gabrielle to meet and bond with Sebastian. But she wouldn’t want her to steal Sebastian away from her. Maybe Gabrielle and Tweenie could bond together instead of Gabrielle and Sebastian. “Anyway,” Rebecca continued. “How many others know about demons?” “Your parents do.” Gabrielle said happily. “Really?” Rebecca smiled. “How come?” “Oh please. They’re one of the most respected beings. How can they not know.” Gabrielle responded. “Do you know if there are any demons in the Order of Doom?” Rebecca asked seriously. “Well, I’m not sure. I don’t think there were when the group first originated but there should be some demons now.It would take a demon to know how to capture a fellow demon.” Gabrielle said cleverly. Rebecca said nothing. “Look Rebecca. Don’t get too worked up about this. Your parents and a bunch of other mystic beings are taking care of this stuff. You just focus on your magic.” Gabrielle advised. “Do you mind if I come up to your school tomorrow?” Gabrielle asked. Rebecca thought it was a good idea. Gabrielle made her feel relaxed. Also, it’d be cool to have such a fairy with you. “Sure. Maybe you could even join the cheerleading team.” Rebecca joked. Gabrielle frowned. “Why is it that you strange people have a less than warm attitude at the mention of cheerleading?” Rebecca asked half-heartedly. Gabrielle sighed and studied Rebecca. “No, nothing. It’s just that the cheerleading team is a really cagey way of the Order Of Doom to carry out their actions without anybody suspecting them. It has happened so many times: The coach is compelled by the Order, the coach is a spy for the Order, the coach is part of the order and so on.” Rebecca just stared at her and Gabrielle shifted uncomfortably. “Well, it’s really rare anyway! I don’t expect to find it in a school in Middlefield.” She added. “No, you’re right.” Rebecca said absent-mindedly. “Coach Gwen is…different. When I accidentally touched her, I got a vision…” Rebecca’s voice shook and Gabrielle leaned forward, her golden eyes twinkling. “It wasn’t definite. But it was a man.” Rebecca said recalling the vision. “How did he look like?” Gabrielle pressed on and Rebecca racked her brain. “He was sitting like a king. I didn’t really see his face but I could tell he was dark haired and powerful.” Rebecca ended and looked at Gabrielle, her blue eyes sparkling with uncertainty as she said, “Could she be one of the members?” Gabrielle didn’t respond. After a few minutes, she said, “Well, for one, we cant be too sure.” She said. “Have you spoken to Sebastian about it?” Rebecca couldn’t really remember if she did. “I don’t think so. All I know is that he didn’t seem to happy when I said I joined the cheerleading team…” Her voice trailed off. That was why Sebastian wasn’t ecstatic when she announced it. Rebecca was in danger and he didn’t want to frighten her. She felt angry that he hadnt told her but she also felt glad that he was concerned for her safety. “I’ll accompany you tomorrow, Rebecca. And I’m gonna kick butt at practice.” They grinned. “I know you will.” Rebecca said as she watched the sunflowers on the wall gradually wither.
