I hopped every two stairs to make it down to the kitchen as quickly as I possibly could, making my way to the coffee maker. I opened the top and.. Hey, looks like my mom already prepared it before she went to bed for the night.
I chuckle and start the machine and leave it to brew while looking for something to eat. There wasn't really much of a selection to choose from. It was either going to be cereal or a granola bar. I went along with a few granola bars and shoved them into my pockets. It's not like anyone will stop me from eating while I'm in class.
The scent of fresh coffee hit me from across the kitchen. I made my way towards the coffee machine and pour the scalding hot liquid into a black mug, taking a couple sips of it before deeming it too hot to drink.
I stole another glance at my phone. 6:15 AM. Mom should be getting up at any minute now, since we happen to live five miles away from the school in town, and the first class starts at 7:45 AM.
I already have my stuff for the first day prepared, the backpack is sitting on the small couch that we have. Right next to it, our German Shepard, Sheila is curled up and sleeping.
Usually, I'd be surprised that I didn't end up waking her up... But I keep forgetting how old she is too. Sheila has been around since I was four, and old age is just beginning to catch up with her. The thought of her passing scares me, and I don't know how well I'd be able to cope with losing a childhood friend like her.
Speaking of childhood friends, it looks like I'll be reuniting with a few close friends that I made back in elementary school: Hyung, Jason and Max. The last time I saw them before I moved away was back in sixth grade. We always stuck together and devised mischief when the time called for it.
I check the time again. 6:37 AM.
"Mom! If you don't get up, I'm going to be late!" I shouted up the stairway. That's weird... Mom never usually sleeps in this late, she must've had a rough night. Well, at least there's a bus stop not too far away from the house. The bus arrives at 7:00 AM.
Picking up the cup of coffee once more, I down what's left of my drink and fill a thermos with the remaining coffee. I know I'm going to need it throughout the day.
I head over towards the couch and give Sheila a gentle pet on the head as I snatched up my backpack.
"Keep an eye on mom for me, girl." I told her this and smiled down at her. "I know you won't let me down.."
Recently, my mother has been stressed with moving around so much to try and get away from her ex. To put it short, he wasn't a very nice guy and didn't treat either me or my mom right, so I finally got her to leave him one day, and we've been running ever since.
Sheila never liked him. Hell, I bet she'd be able to take the fucker down if he ever got so much as coming close to the house. That and he'd have to get through me. I'm not going to let him come back into my life. The only time it'll happen will be the day I strike him dead..
I checked the clock again. 6:50 AM. Time's up, it's time to go. I grabbed everything that I needed and stepped out of the house. My bus stop was just down the street a little bit. I went over to the stop sign and waited for five minutes or so before the yellow bus pulled up.
The doors opened and I stepped inside, climbing up the stairs before the driver stopped me.
"Are you a new kid?"
"Yeah," I replied. "I'm new."
"What's your name?"
"Jack. Jack Noir."One of the kids stuck his head out into the aisle of the bus once I said my name.
"Hey, long time no see, Slick!" The kid shouted from the back of the bus.
"What the..?" I was confused for a moment, and moved towards the back of the bus before I finally recognized who the kid was. It was Hyung.
