After calling my boss and asking him if it was alright, I took a taxi to where I worked.
People stared at me as I walked past them and up the steps to Tom's apartment. Probably because I was still covered in cuts and bruises.
His wife Jamie answered the door with a smile and then began to frown at the sight of me. She let out a long sigh and pulled me in for a hug before closing the door behind me. She leaned back a little to look at me properly.
"Was it Duke again...?" She whispered even though no one in the was in the hall. I replied with a nod as I felt hot tears start to form at the corners of my eyes.
"Come on lets get you cleaned up and get you in the shower and then we can talk." She said leading me up the dimly lit hall.
Jamie and Tom, the owners of the pub I waitressed at, seemed like a scary motorcycle type but they were the exact opposite. Although they were both covered in tattoos and had some of the craziest hair I had ever seen, they were probably the nicest people I knew, which took most by surprise. Jamie was like an older sister to me and always helped me when i needed her to.
She handed me towels and i peeled off my clothing before stepping under the hot steamy water. I wanted to wash away the thoughts and pain of last night but it seemed impossible.
Duke had hit me many times before and it was almost a daily thing. Last night, when Harry found me, was pretty much a typical night for me. What Harry and everyone else didn't know though was how i needed Duke. Mainly, I needed him because he gave me a place to go to every night after work. I had tried staying with Jamie and Tom but they had a daughter a few months ago and they needed the spare room so I found Duke and told them it was okay because I would be staying with him.
Usually he came home drunk every night before slapping me around and heading off to bed.
Duke had never really touched me..intimately, I mean. He had tried but I always pushed him off before anything really happened. This angered him and usually ended with me having a nice bruise on my cheek. Then he would forget by morning. It was a cycle.
I finished showering and stepped out into the small bath carpet. The mirrors had completely fogged and I wondered how long I had been in there. I checked my phone; it had been about 20 minutes. I toweled off my hair and padded down the hall to Jamie's room where she let me keep a spare pair of clothes. I put on the running shorts and t-shirt, wanting to stay comfortable.
Jamie was sitting at the kitchen table with a tea set out for me. She patted the seat and i plopped down next to her and let out a sigh. I looked up to meet her eyes and she gave me a concered look before I spoke.
I explained her everything that had happened recently and only sort-of mentioned Harry. She immediately asked more about him and I told her how he took me in and let me stay the night. Tom walked in then and said hello, clearly busy, but he stopped and shook his head as he got a good look at me.
"I swear that guy is really going to get it one of these days..." He mumbled to himself before patting my shoulder and walking off.
We spent a majority of the afternoon talking while i helped her clean up around the house and take care of the baby.
At about 4 o'clock it was time for my shift. I put on my light jean shorts and black v-neck, which is what I usually wore to work. I applied some make-up over the cuts and bruises on my face along with some light mascara to highlight my eyes before rushing down to the back door that led from the house and into the bar. I silently prayed the bar would be less busy tonight.
