Chapter 2
Changes
A soft beeping noise presented itself in my ears and with every passing second the beeping became louder, more vivid. I felt my brain strain with the effort of waking the rest of my body up. Slowly my eyelids moved. To anyone else it would have appeared as a small flutter of the eyelids, but to me it felt like I was lifting a ton of bricks. I continued to push until I felt my eyelids lift completely and bright lights hit my eyes. I winced at the light, my eyes taking in the blurry image of a ceiling and lights above me. A wave of chemicals and clean completely took over my sense of smell causing my nose to wrinkle in disugust. Hospital. I knew that smell all too well. I tried to use my voice, my vocal cords thrumming in an attempt to create any sound at all. Finally with all my best efforts a hoarse groan escaped from my mouth.
“Oh my God She’s awake!” I heard a voice scream. I turned to see a thin tanned brown haired woman staring down at me worridley.
“Mum?”
“Oh my baby! I’m so glad you’re okay!” She said before pulling me into a hug, her voice breaking down into soft sobs.
“Sh, Mum it’s ok” I said stroking her head softly. “I’m ok now”
I hugged my for a good five minutes or so before a light cough snapped the two of us out of our moment of closeness.
“Sorry to interrupt Mrs. Johnson, but I just need to check with Demi, see how she’s feeling, what she remembers etc.” A voice said. I turned to see a young female doctor just beside my bed.
“Yes of course” My mum smiled her eyes never leaving me. Bending down she kissed me on the forehead before pulling away to grab a chair. She placed the chair close to my bed and sat down stroking my hand.
“Hi Demi, I’m Dr. Bridges”
“Hi”
“How are you feeling?” She asked, clicking her pen and picking up a clipboard.
“Um, my throat hurts, my body feels a little heavier, and my head hurts a little, but apart from that I feel fine”
“Okay” She said taking down the necessary notes “Can you tell me what you remember?”
“Er well yesterday, I was walking after my friend Kieran, and I crossed the road. I mustn’t have looked properly and I was hit by a car or something? The last thing I remember was sinking into like light, which I thought was weird since when most people pass out they see black right?” I said my brow furrowing with confusion.
“Well Demi, I hate to break it to you, but that happened three weeks ago”
“What do you mean three weeks ago?” I asked now completely lost.
“Honey, you’ve been in a coma for three weeks” My mum said softly.
“Oh” Was all I could say.
“You are extremely lucking Demi, you were hit by a van. From the mass and speed at which the vehicle was going, you should be dead” The doctor said in awe “However you seem extremely healthy, your vitals are good. You’ve fractured a few ribs which seemes pretty much healed and aside from the coma, your brain is coping well. We’ve checked for any internal bleeding you’re all clear. As far as I’m concerned Demi you’re a walking miracle” Dr. Bridges smiled slightly.
“Can I go home now then?” I asked sitting up slowly.
“Well there’s one more thing we need to talk about”
